5 Reasons Why Owning Many Cheap Cars Is Better Than Owning One Expensive Car

Many car guys have pondered this question, “Would you rather have five 5,000 dollar cars, or one 25,000 dollar car.” In the end, there is no right or wrong answer, both choices have their pros and cons; here are some reasons why many cheap cars win out.

ONE Variety is the spice of life.
Imagine this… your life consists of eating steak and potatoes for every meal and in between ziplining and jetskiing and then repeating it the next day for an entire year. At first it would be exciting and awesome, but it would get boring after a while. The same thing can apply with cars, I think the main reason why car guys mod their cars so much is that their car doesn’t excite them as much as it used to, so they make it faster or more stunning to look at. One major thing that makes a meal great is the variety of flavors and textures of the food that combine to make it great, same with cars. Spice up your life with different cars, it can be fun.

TWO Little to no depreciation.
I’m sure a lot of you have felt the effects of depreciation, buying a car one year and selling it for the half the price you bought it for another year. By buying cheap used cars instead, you can avoid depreciation almost entirely, saving you money; that saved money can then be used for car parts!

THREE If one car gives up the ghost, it won’t be the end of the world.
If you only have a 25,000 dollar E46 M3 and one day you get in a wreck and it’s totaled, that can really ruin your week. Same story if it just won’t start, your head gasket explodes, etc. Meanwhile, if you have multiple cars and one gives up on you, you can just drive another car, problem solved.

FOUR You don’t have to worry a lot about damaging it.
Many people buy new cars and guard them like their own children. They wash and wax them every week, they cry if they find a tiny paint chip, and they wouldn’t even THINK about going offroad. Meanwhile, if you have multiple cheap cars, if you curb a wheel, you laugh, you WANT your car to get dirty and you could car less if you get a new paint chip because your car has dozens of them. Besides, as long as the working parts of the car are working fine, you don’t care.

FIVE There’s a car for every occasion.
Many people search for the car that can do it all, tow and haul stuff, track race, etc. While some cars come close, no car has become the car that can do everything, and do it well. That’s where many cars come in. Going to rallycross? Hop in the Subaru WRX STI! Going to the drag strip? Grab the keys to the classic Charger. Need something that goes like stink at the racetrack? Time to fire up the BMW M3! Going on a hot date and want to cruise in style? Let’s drive the Cadillac El Dorado. With many cars, your garage will become a proverbial Swiss Army Knife. That way, you’ll be prepared like a good Boy Scout should.

im not gonna lie, i’d just end up with 5 or more volvos.
my ideal garage is a volvo pv with a v8 swap for drag racing, a 142 T5 swap for track days, a amazon that summer cruicer, a 240 diesel wagon because winterbeater and towing. and a 740 because daily. see i have this all planned out.

But what about separate insurance and licensing for each one? That can be pretty expensive. :/

You can look it up. If you play your cards right, it can be cheaper than owning one car.

I pay $11 a month insurance on one of my cars, so if you do it right then you can have multiple cars cheaply
