I’m a diehard Nissan fan, no doubt. But I’ve recently come to agree with the opinion held by a few regarding the hype and attention towards the Nissan GTR within the automotive world and industry: It’s overated.

Have you ever wondered whether the Japanese-branded car you’re looking at, is actually built in Japan or was imported from there? Here is my theory on how observing one simple area might help you conclude on whether the model you’re looking at originated truly from Japan.

The other day CTzen Speedmaster 227 wrote a post about a few of the Subaru Impreza models that are relatively unknown other than the performance- oriented WRX and WRX STI (link https://www.carthrottle.com/post/nk7yd8j/ ). As a spin-off, I’d thought I would explore another area of unknown Japanese gems, specifically the Impreza’s more practical cousin, the Legacy.

Fans of Initial D within Western Countries may know that when Initial D was first dubbed and translated into English, it was handled by Tokyopop, an American distributor, publisher, and licenser of translated Japanese anime/manga into English for most Western audiences. Needless to say, they bombed at their efforts to bring it to a greater English-speaking audience. Here’s why, base on two main points:

We all have cars dear to our hearts for a particular reason, or those at define us as a person. From a particular life event to just childhood dreams we aim to fulfil, there are cars special to us in this way. I met an extraordinary person during my often-discussed vacation in Brisbane. Meet Ian Bone of Ipswich, Queensland. He’s been running a local motorsport museum in Ipswich since his retirement, collecting and restoring old, notable race-cars from both English and Australian motorsport. From open-wheelers of the 1930s to 90s Bathurst racers, his display is full of classic motors or remnants of them (largely doors and hoods of V8 Supercars).

My refutation: They’re only boring because that’s how they start out as. If you want it to scream uniqueness and make it interesting, that mainly falls upon your responsibility and decision to make it your own. Plus one of the ways you can get closer to establishing a car’s soul, is through the process of tuning and modifying. It doesn’t matter what style you aim to incorporate, how fast you want it to be, or whether you want it to slide. VIP, drift, circuit, if you want your car to not feel minimalistic and like the rest, you make sure it isn’t.

These things litter Hong Kong’s roads everyday, ferrying families, businessmen, Uber customers, and other individuals who often can afford a private driver. They may look like MPVs to the rest of you (myself nicknaming them ‘boxes’), but to the majority of the Hong Kong public, they’re luxury vehicles. One in particular, is a local favourite: The Toyota Alphard/Vellfire.
