Suggestions for a decent beater?

As much as I love my 67 Cougar I could really use a “better” car as a daily. I’m thinking I might save up all of my cash this summer and get a daily so that my Cougar can just be full time project car.

Since I probably won’t be making more than 3 or 4 thousand dollars over the course of a summer that’s the limit. Other than that, I’d prefer something fast and fun. Doesn’t necessarily need to be pretty or fuel efficient. Don’t much care how old it is so long as it’s fuel injected. It does have to be something I can get locally in the US. I know 4k isn’t really a lot to work with.

So, any ideas?

Any old Mercedes Benz Diesel, I own the W123 but a latter one might do you a little better.
Drives very very very slow but mine has never not started and I get 30mpg consistently while still looking like a baller.

After a while you get used to the slow, and will be able to time the shifts to keep in the powerband for freeway merging, which always sucks especially if the on ramp goes uphill.

With a wielded diff he will certainly have a fun drift car, but for a daily that’s totally not practical. I guess it also depends if you live more rural or in a city, but only think about the horrors a narrow Wal-Mart parking lot will give you with a wielded diff

Not where I live, unfortunately. The only ones I’ve seen here are too poor of a shape to be worth buying.
