What's an underrated engine that deserves some time in the limelight? I'd like to put forward the Toyota 3S-GE 'Beams' engine. Probably overshadowed by the 2JZ, but it's super revvy, tuneable, and produced with Yamaha.

The 250CU.IN Ford Inline-6. Over-shadowed by all the nasty V8s, but this engine with 4.1L has actually more torque than the 5L V8 from Ford. The Australians somwhow couldn’t get the V8 as good as that one, probably due to insurance. And since ‘straya is full of crazy people, the aftermarket is good for builds for more than 700hp. Also the I-6 is lighter than the V8s it has good benefits for the dragstrip also.

Audi’s classic non-turbo 10 valve 1.9-2.3 5 cylinder.Tremendously strong and durable in any configuration, 400.000+ kilometers on the clock is common. Plenty of torque and power and great driveability.

It could be found in any car in the Audi range during the 1980’s, and even appeared in the B2 Passat Syncro. Power was anywhere between 101 (1.9, 2.0) and 136 (2.1, 2.2, 2.3) horsepower. Most cars used big V6’s to approach those figures back then.

And there are very few engines that can match that sound.

Well it’s kind of the most recognizeable engine in rallying

for example both the Audi Sportquattro and the Urquattro has it

Yes! I love this engine! It’s one of my favourites, featured in the Altezza RS200. I think personally all engines that go into the Fiat Coupe are underrated, as they’re unreliable as considered by most, but the 4 cylinder ones have really heritage in the Lancia Delta Integrale, and the 5 cylinder models can produce good power even stock from the factory.
