An Alfa Romeo Giulia Estate Isn't Happening, And It's All The Stelvio's Fault
If you were looking forward to the prospect of a wagon-bodied Alfa Romeo Giulia, we have some bad news: it’s not going to happen.
Speaking to Car magazine, Alfa Romeo manufacturing chief Alfredo Altavilla confirmed what estate-obsessed petrolheads across the world won’t want to hear. “We decided not to do a Giulia Sportwagon,” he said, adding: “Do we really need it if the Stelvio SUV drives that well? Maybe not…Stelvio can capture all the people who would otherwise have been interested in the SW.”
In short, the chance of a Giulia Sportwagon appearing as anything other than a render has been killed off by the Stelvio SUV. This isn’t all that surprising, as the rise in SUV sales has coincided with a fall in demand for premium estates. Last year for instance Ian Callum said that a Jaguar XE Sportbrake wouldn’t happen due to low demand. And Jaguar’s best selling car is? Why, it’s the F-Pace SUV, of course.
Regardless, the Stelvio doesn’t seem like such a bad substitute, and we’re looking forward to trying it out soon. All we need to do is purge our memories of all those gorgeous Giulia Sportwagon renders…

The Durango SUV Is Very Impressed
Kind of expected this, and part of the reason I hate most SUVs.
Would you hate a 505hp SUV that is better than most cars of a brand?
In particular, I hate the sporting pretence that some of the more powerful versions have (for example, the Range Rover Sport SVR); yes, they have a lot of power, and most have clever suspension to keep them vaguely upright, but none of that can overcome the laws of physics. I see the ‘Super-SUV’, as I’m calling it, rather pointless.
Don’t blame this on SUV, how about blame this on FCA not making enough money out of Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Fiat…etc to fund Alfa to make that estate. Mercedes can afford to have GLE 63 AMG and E 63 AMG estate at once, Audi can have SQ7 and RS6 estate at once. Even small company like Subaru can make Levorg alongside Forester. So yeah, you know who to blame.
That’s because the Stelvio looks like the Guilia too much.
it like Honda saying we wont make a new S2000, cuz you know……. you have the Civic Type R for that.
Meanwhile at BMW and Mercedes: Can we make an SUV 5mm shorter than the X5 and call it the X4.5 there is a market for this> enter production.
Yeah, but Alfa Romeo now need to sell as many cars and possible, and because they don’t have so much money, for example as Mercedes, they decided it will be the Stelvio. Because let’s be honest, Stelvio will sell more
Truer words have never been said.
This SUV culture has all but ruined cars for us with these bulky turds jamming up the roads with idiots on the wheel.
Somewhere, Flux (Capacitor) celebrates in the distance
Aw heeeyyyylll yeah.
just lower the stelvio
Yeeeeey
Estate = lowered minivan.
An estate or wagon is just a small van with windows.
no its a sedan with a continued roofline….
so a bmw 3 series estate is a lowered minivan?
Cuvs and the fact that no one but enthusiasts and weirdos like us want wagons. And we cant afford them. Those that can buy boring exotics.
