Audi Denies That A V6 Version Of The R8 Is Happening

Rumours of a V6 R8 have been doing the rounds ever since the introduction of the second-generation version of the car. Such a thing would make sense, wouldn’t it? It’d fill the void left by the magnificent old V8 version, while also bolstering R8 sales in markets like China, where car tax is linked to engine capacity.

A couple of years ago a leaked production schedule showing a V6 R8 debuting in 2018 added fuel to the fire, and as recently as two days ago, Autocar ran a story claiming that a 2.9-litre twin-turbo V6-powered version of the car is indeed happening, coinciding with a general mid-life refresh for the range. The publication even gave a rough expectation of output - apparently we’re looking at over 500bhp and 500lb ft of torque.

However, Road and Track has since been told by an Audi spokesperson that “there is no V6 planned for the R8.”

As far as denials go, that sounds pretty indisputable, but the official line given to the press by a manufacturer isn’t necessarily going to match what’s going on behind the scenes. At the very least, it’s highly likely Audi has at least considered and even tested a V6 R8 (prototypes supposedly powered by V6s have previously been spotted).

Then again, it’s looking like there may not be any future R8s beyond this generation and the planned facelift, so it’d be understandable for Audi to let the car bow out with the V10 and the V10 alone.

So is a V6 R8 happening or not? We’ll have to wait and see…

People say the car world is dying
It’s not. Just because a few manufacturers release more smaller, downsized engines and hybrid or electric vehicles doesn’t mean they aren’t good. Let’s look at the AMG gts. It got rid of the SLS’ much loved 6.3 in return for a 4.2(?) Turbo v8. People love that car. Then there are cars like the NSX, dare i say prius, the holy Trinity, Rimacs and more which changed how we see hyrbids, electrics, and efficient cars. The world is changing. Why not change with it?

4.0*
And also, what you said is really nice.

Because i prefer a manual transmission, a high revving natural aspirated engine and no electric support systems in my sports cars. I prefer following whats worked in the past and maintaining a culture.

As for the question mark after ‘4.2’, it’s actually just a 4.0, but still an awesome engine

I learn to accept downsized engines or electricity. It’s just it might makes the car world less exciting. Just like the ol’ fashioned manual transmission. I’m perfectly okay with automatic, it’s just manual are more involving therefore would be more exciting (not in stop start traffic tho). Also I think bigger engine would excite your inner nine year old while downsizing and electricity won’t be.

To me tho, the “car world” is dying because of those nonsense autopilot bullshit which takes away the drivers involvement more and more. Many people would be buying cars in the future and expect to not driving them at all. The car itself won’t be dying. Cars substantially are only a means of transporting. The driving, however, the excitement of going high speed on your command, doing sideways and stuffs and going through the limit, would be dying.

Mr.PurpleV12

I have a prediction that they are replacing the R8 with a new top of the line car like an R10.

They are just being hush hush about it.

Why not go straight to R15 and a supercharged version called RS15
