We've all seen the leaked magazine shots, but now Ford has officially unveiled the brand-new Ford Mustang in six cities across the globe.

The updated design is intended to continue the 'Stang's distinctive look, while ushering in a new era of advanced technology. The biggest improvement comes in the form of an independent rear suspension system, replacing the old-school live axle found in the previous generation.

The rear suspension's geometry, springs, dampers and bushings have all been modified with the specific intention of improving performance at the limit. The front end gets a rework too, with an improved subframe stiffening the structure, and a new double-ball joint MacPherson strut system allows the use of bigger brakes for massive stopping power.

Under the bonnet you'll find one of three engines. The headline powerplant is the 5.0-litre V8, which gets upgraded valvetrains, cylinder heads and a new intake manifold to bump power to 420hp and 390lb/ft of torque. Also available is a 2.3-litre four-cylinder EcoBoost engine that makes 305hp and 300lb/ft of torque, and a 3.7-litre V6 that chucks out 'at least' 300hp and 270lb/ft of torque.

These engines are mated to both manual and automatic gearboxes. Purists will be pleased to know the manual has been updated to allow smoother shifts, while the automatic gets steering wheel-mounted paddles.

The designers wanted to make it instantly recognisable as a Mustang, with a long sculpted bonnet and short rear deck. The fastback design imitates iconic Mustangs of the past, while the 'signature shark-bite front fascia and trapezoidal grille' get a modern update. Around the back, the tri-bar tail-lights also remain. Overall, the 2015 model is lower and wider, which gives a more aggressive stance compared to the current car.

The convertible model gets a multi-layered, insulated cloth roof to quieten the cabin, and it'll retract twice as fast as before.

The driver gets the option to select from a number of Drive Modes to suit their current driving style. Toggle switches on the console can adjust steering effort and engine response, as well as transmission and electronic stability control settings. The GT also gets launch control.

For the first time since 1979, the Mustang will be sold outside America, with Ford hoping to capitalise on the model's iconic history.
