Here's How The New Ford GT Compares To Its Predecessor

Just how different is the new V6 Ford GT to its muscular V8 predecessor? Doug DeMuro takes a closer look

I’m sure most of you know by now that Ford’s new GT has eschewed eight cylinders and supercharger for a 3.5-litre turbocharged V6. But that’s not all that separates the 2017 Ford GT from the 2005 car of the same name.

As shown by Doug DeMuro’s bumper-to-bumper (sorry) examination, there’s a huge difference in way these cars are built, the materials used, the philosophies behind them and how they feel to drive.

The more we think about it, the more we struggle to think of another supercar that’s represented quite such a radical departure from its predecessor. The 2005 GT is a retro-styled homage made from relatively simple ingredients, whereas the 2017 GT is a futuristic tech fest that doesn’t give a damn about the past.

Each has its own appeal, but which would you rather own?

I’m now imagining what a straight-8 would sound like. My god it would be massively long though

It’s ‘cuz the V6 is turbo and the V8 is supercharged. Superchargers use hp and so that’s why. In my mind, I love the 2005 Gt (especially since I was born in 2005).

I was never that excited about the original Ford GT, so I’d much rather have the new one. Although a GT40 would be awesome as well…

The 2005 GT wasn’t naturally aspirated, was it? I used to think it was supercharged.

I very much like the new GT, it reminds me of crazy homologation specials like the Porsche 911 GT1 and Nissan R390.

That being said I’m still a victim of the charm of the old one. Can’t beat those retro looks, manual gearbox and a big stonking V8.

I thought the ‘05 GT came with a supercharger stock. Whipple if I’m not mistaken?
