Here's Some Cylinder Head Porting Giving A 91bhp Increase In Power
Cylinder head porting is perhaps a lesser known form of tuning these days, but it can be an incredibly effective one. As we’ve detailed before, it’s all about smoothing and re-profiling parts of a cylinder head, removing any defects creating in the casting process while optimising and enlarging the inlet and outlet ports.
This gives an increase in the flow rate of fuel and air, leading to an increase in power. It can be done in your own garage with fairly simple tools, but you really need to know what you’re doing, or have a ‘disposable’ head to practice on.
If you do know what you’re doing, and are willing to put the time in, the results can be dramatic. The extensively ported cylinder head and inlet manifold combo seen in this latest episode of Engine Masters is seen giving the small block Mopar V8 its sat atop a massive, 91bhp increase in power. All for free.
Impressive…

90hp from porting? Rotary builders be like: “that’s cute”.
Keep in mind that the gains are completely dependent on the quality of your heads. High quality stuff won’t gain much, as they have few imperfections to correct and the ports will probably be maxed.
