The upcoming hardcore, track-only version of the McLaren P1 hypercar took a step closer to reality today, as the Woking-based company previewed a ‘design concept’ of the P1 GTR. Only the 375 buyers of the ‘regular’ P1 will be eligible to purchase the GTR, at an eye-watering price of £1.98 million apiece. For that sum, buyers will get a reworked 3.8-litre twin-turbo V8 pushing out 986bhp when combined with the P1’s electric motor, up from 903bhp. It’ll also have revised suspension, brakes and aero, plus a wider track and racing slicks.

The car will be available “as a fully comprehensive programme to include driving events, training and vehicle support,” which we’re assuming means McLaren will keep possession of the cars most of the time, as Ferrari does with its similar programmes for the FXX and 599XX.

The design concept will be showcased at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance on 15 August, and will go into production in June 2015.
