Holy Crap, I Got Over 33MPG In A Ford Mustang GT
Before we go any further, yes: I hyper-miled a V8 Mustang, and yes: I realise that probably makes me seem like a massive dullard. While I’m sure many of you are keen to now dismiss all this with a cool story bro, I do think it’s genuinely interesting given this current downsizing trend we find ourselves in that an old-school, N/A V8 can clock 33.2mpg on a long, gentle motorway drive.
What makes it even more interesting is I went on a similar drive in Ecoboost ‘Stang, and managed 38mpg. Yes, that’s better, but not by as much as you’d think, particularly given that this was a downsized engine-friendly, mostly off-boost run.
As is often a case with these modern turbo engines, the gap closes even further when you’re pressing on. Go for a thrash in the Ecoboost, and you’ll typically get about 16mpg, while the V8 tends to drop to about 13mpg.
Granted, these aren’t figures we got from rigorous scientific testing, but it’s nice to know you might not get clobbered in your wallet quite as much as you might expect by buying a V8. And hey, for the improvement in the soundtrack department I’d happily take an even bigger hit in the financial department…

Prius is proud.
Mustang and the torque that twist the chassis laughs at proud prius while giving the driver joy.
probably because you can sit at around 2000 rpm in 6th In a high powered car compared to some stupid eco box bouncing off the redline
Why would you be ‘bouncing off the redline’ on a long, gentle motorway drive’?
6th gear overdrive yo!5th could be overdrive as well, not sure though
I call photoshop… U cant hypermile a sports car legally lol
How is it you’re managing to get that out of a V8 Mustang, whereas I can juuuuuuuuust squeeze 40MPG out of a 1.4 non-turbo?
Modern tech is crazy lol
Because the 1.4 turbo has no torque and has to work way harder to keep the car moving.
such a little engine is working insanely hard to propel the car. The V8 doesn’t need to work that hard to move. Don’t downshift to overtake, You will actually move in higher gears

Nah they only achieve 22mpg
Its amazing how much you can improve a cars gas mileage when you dont drive it around acting like a total tool with something to prove.
Although, how could you drive it that long and not want to listen to that Coyote 5.0 lol
Meenwhile i’m getting 65 mpg on my fiesta, but crying because no v8… Still, could be worse, i could be driving a hybrid
When you want a ford ecoboost, without the boost!
Am I the only one wanting him to fill the tank up drive then fill the tank up again and do the real math?
I’m sure it’s not far off but I’ve seen some people show me the computer MPG and then I tell them to actually do the math and it usually ends up being 3-4 MPG lower than the computer.
I did that with my girlfriend’s dad’s car recently. We took it to a wedding about 400 km from home… Long story short, the computer said 8.5 L per 100 km, the math (which I triple checked) said 6.8 L per 100 km.
