Horrific Koenigsegg Crash Injures 19 Spectators At Polish Car Show
A Polish car show took a disastrous turn yesterday as a Koenigsegg CCX lost control and wiped out a group of spectators. The 19 injured people, including a couple of children, were all taken to hospital and are in a stable condition.
The 'experienced' driver of the CCX was playing up to the crowd at the Wypadek Gran Turismo Show as he attempted a short drift to line himself up for the straight road ahead. After over-cooking it he reverses and faces down the road. Perhaps with pride dented following his failed drift, he gives it a few too many beans.
With wheels spinning he never looks in full control, but everything begins to go wrong when the driver changes into second gear. As he floors the throttle the back comes loose, and a couple of over-corrections later, the CCX slides towards the helpless spectators. Protected by nothing but a metal barrier, the car ploughs through the crowd causing serious injuries.
While it is easy to blame the driver for getting carried away, blame should also lie at the feet of the event organisers. We often complain about health and safety regulations, but it's hard to imagine how anyone could believe that it was okay to allow spectators so close to such powerful supercars on high speed runs. And those barriers would never provide adequate protection from an out of control car at any speed.
