I'm Driving A VW Golf GTI Clubsport For Six Months: What Do You Want To Know?
Christmas has come a few days early for TeamCT, as we’ve just been given the keys to this rather dapper hatchback for just under six months. It’s a Volkswagen Golf GTI Edition 40 Clubsport - to give it its official name - although I suspect we’ll just end up calling it The Clubsport.
It effectively replaces the BMW M2 we’ve been running since September, although that car will be sticking around for another couple of weeks.
It produces 286bhp when its overboost function kicks in (yo?), and will hit 0-62mph in 5.9 seconds. It’s fitted with VW Group’s fancy VAQ differential, so can send anything up to 100 per cent of that power output to either front wheel if required. It also has a pretty cool aero package, which cancels out lift entirely.
‘Ours’ is the five-door DSG automatic version in Tornado Red, and as such it has the largest base price of the range at £33,005. After adding £1350 bucket seats, £830 adaptive dampers, £595 19-inch alloy wheels and a few other optional bits and pieces, the price inflates to £36,721.
As ever with our long-term test cars, we want you guys to get involved. So, what do you want to know about the Clubsport, and what would you like to see us do with it?

Is it better with the manual or auto? (If you get to drive the manual)
I’ve driven the S which is only available as a manual, and like all stick-shifting MQB cars it’s a nice, slick shift. Not the most mechanical feeling, but it’s still one of the better shifts out there so if it was my money I’d go for the manual.
The DSG is good though, even if it is the older six-speeder. It’s way too sluggish off the line in eco mode though…
Comaprison with Focus RS and Civic Type-R.
How fast does it go in reverse?
Can Alex fist it?
Prove Why this car is superior to the Honda Civic Type R
Can you fit a nuclear warhead in the boot?
Or even further: Can safely fit an eel along with pure sodium in the boot?
What about the Clubsport S?
Why did you choose a dsg transmission?
We didn’t choose it specifically - this was the car that VW offered us. But I’m looking forward to seeing if the DSG can convince me it’s a better fit than the manual :)
Is it coming to America?
Does it pass the fist test though?
I haven’t tried yet, but by the looks of it probably not…
