Koenigsegg Could've Gone Faster At Spa If The One:1 Wasn't So Damn Loud

In case you haven’t seen the Koenigsegg One:1’s record breaking Spa lap, check out the video above. Notice something annoying? Yep, the lap record was set during an open track day, with test driver Robert Serwanski having to take a few questionable lines to dodge traffic. We already know Koenigsegg thinks "there’s plenty of room for improvement", but that’s not just because of traffic.

In its official blog, Koenigsegg has revealed that the record lap was never intended to be set during the public session. The lap we’ve all seen was set on day one of its two days of lapping the circuit, and was only ever intended to be used as practice for the main event. Unfortunately, things didn’t quite go according to plan.

Sound limits imposed at the track were 110dB on day one, and 103dB on day two. The car was only just within the limits on the first session, so the crew rigged the exhaust to try to fall within the limits for the second session. The team at Spa had been kind enough to offer Koenigsegg a free slot during the track day where they could complete laps without traffic, however as soon as the One:1 opened the taps for a full bore lap, the marshals black flagged it for exceeding noise limits.

Koenigsegg must feel like the world is against it. Only last month, the One:1 arrived at the Nurburgring ready to shave ‘double digits’ off the Porsche 918 Spyder’s 6m 57s lap time, however ‘Ring bosses banned them from setting a time. Now its attempts to dominate Spa have been curtailed by more regulation.

Still, considering it was a practice lap in traffic, that record breaking lap is still highly impressive. Watch this space…
