Two years ago, a man in a classic Rolls-Royce went through a red light and crashed into another car, killing the 81-year-old driver. Officers suspected he had been drinking, and he came up with a cunning plan to avoid getting in trouble.

Autoblog reports that after police arrived on the scene, officers took Tracy Garon to one side while they investigated the crash site.

When cops weren’t looking, Garon headed over to a shop and emerged drinking a can of Miller Lite. When officers realised what was happening, they tried to confiscate the beer, but Garon carried on drinking. Once cops got hold of the can for evidence, Garon kicked it over, spilling its contents on the road.

Garon thought that by drinking after the crash and before the breathalyser/blood test, prosecutors wouldn’t be able to determine whether he was drunk at the time of the crash. Police had seen this tactic before, and had their own trick up their sleeve.

Officers tested Garon’s blood levels three times over the next three hours, recording readings of 0.25, 0.23 and 0.21 - all approximately three times the legal limit. The consistency confirmed he had been drinking heavily for an extended period.

In June, Garon pleaded guilty to DUI manslaughter and vehicular homicide, and was sentenced to 17 years in prison.
