McLaren Is Going To Make A Stupidly Quick All-Electric P1

According to reports, McLaren is about to build a pure EV version of the P1 with 675LT-beating performance

With its 177bhp electric motor, the McLaren P1 is already rather brisk if it’s run in electric-only mode. But, it seems McLaren wants to go one step further than that, and produce a version of its hypercar sans twin-turbo V8, relying solely on lots of batteries and some stupidly powerful motors.

A company insider cited by Auto Express said that the company will create “an EV that’s as exciting as a 675LT,” a car that will “need to manage 30 minutes on track with a 30-minute break before heading back out again.”

Although it’ll sit in McLaren’s ‘Ultimate Series’, it won’t be a successor to the P1, something the source reported won’t be here until 2023 or perhaps even later, as the company is waiting for a sufficient step forward in automotive technology before it gets made. The electric P1 will form a sort of stepping stone, and is expected to have a price tag under £1 million. Not exactly cheap, but if it really ends up with 675-baiting performance, we could well be looking at a 200mph-capable EV.

So, environmentally conscious rich people of the world: how about a Tesla Model S and an all-electric McLaren P1 for the perfect two car garage?

All these companies going fully electrical and Disklok just sat here like “We’re staying mechanical.”

If they’re going to do some edgy and hip implementation of the lower case ‘e’ in the name, it better be P1e because that’d spell pie.

I remember watching the Top Gear episode of the McLaren P1 getting driven by Jeremy. He was driving around town in electric mode and explained how you could only go like 20 miles on a full charge lol

I know many enthusiasts are against the development of EV performance cars taking over the industry, but this is where the competition is heading. To be honest, I hate to say it but in the next couple of decades, electric cars will most likely be superior in almost all aspects, and as a function over form sort of guy, whichever yields the greater performance is the option I will be opting for.

I think that most of us would love to own a Tesla Roadster, cheap “fuel” and high performance, what’s wrong with it? I mean the noise would be something that I’d miss a lot.

It is clear that electric motors have better performance, and even though I’m very engineering minded, to me cars are more than just numbers. I’ll never be engineer enough to say I’d prefer EV over ICE. To me the fun of driving comes from the need to shift, heel-toe/double-clutching and also the noise of engine revving up. I also love wrenching an ICE.

The acceleration is already better on some due to instant torque.

True
I also like the fact that with electric power cars are actually made SIMPLER
the whole system is basically a motor-generator, a set of batteries and a control unit, thats it, no gearboxes, no coolants, no oil, no fuel pumps etc etc. And for me the simpler the car is (yet the cleverer the engineering is) the better
However, one of the reasons why I will still be buying combustion-engined cars is the sound…

The use of the word ‘stupidly’ in article headlines is starting to get quite stupidly frequent.

i saw an interesting thing about improving the quality of your essays (creative writing) and one of the 10 points was remove all adverbs, or words ending in “ly”.

Much better title now, isin’t it?

Like ItsHammerTime said, I absolutely hate to see the way cars are going from big noisy engines, to electric cars, but thats just evolution sadly :(
