Mercedes Now Sells Brand New 300SL Gullwing Body Parts
Driving a Mercedes 300SL is a wondrous experience. The process of climbing in over the huge sill and closing the gullwing doors, firing up that glorious straight-six - if I owned one of these, I’d drive it all the damn time. And many owners do.
The only trouble is, what happens if at your latest historic rally, you bin it, or someone ploughs into you? We have seen it happen before with a 300SL on the Mille Miglia, after all. Thankfully since then, Mercedes has come up with an answer that’ll help anyone with either damage or the dreaded tin worm to deal with.
Stuttgart now sells a range of reproduction body parts, built by a “certified supplier” with tooling created via “optimised 3D data from original bodies.” The final shapes are meticulously beaten in using wooden mallets before the panels go through a painstaking quality inspection.
Sounds quite involved, doesn’t it? As you’d expect, this results in the parts being rather expensive, if perhaps less than you’d imagine considering the limited market, and the fact a good Gullwing is a million dollar car these days.
Prices start at €2975 for the ‘rear-end centre section’, rising to €14,875 for a rear quarter panel. The bits can be ordered, “from any Mercedes-Benz sales partner.”

Can I build a new 300 SL with the parts?
Judging by the picture above… No. 😂
seeing that its €15000 just for a rear quarter panel
you might as well buy a complete 300 SL
So is China gonna copy those parts and we can get a piece of body panel for $1?
Chassis 50000$ DLC
Will this affect prices?
Now I think this makes driving classics a little more acceptable.
I wonder if a 300SL with new body panels will be worth less at an auction because it isn’t completely original
You’ve just discovered the process of restoration
So technically the 300SL is in production again?
No.
I didn’t know you could buy a Benz at IKEA. How many pages are in the instruction manual?
Lmao
I sincerely hope this makes comment of the week. Lol
Funny, as I’ve heard a story once of a guy who bought a 190SL (smaller “version” of the 300SL W198, it’s a bit like a Ninja 300 vs a Ninja 600), a couple of years ago, and he was surprised how cheap the parts were: he said that a fuel tank for a 190SL was cheaper than one for a Ford Tempo
youre kidding right?
that should be borderline impossible
or your friends been buying stuff from chinese Ebay
“The final shapes are meticulously beaten in using wooden mallets “
Should have just used toto’s masterful hands
I wish people could do that with other classic cars like my favorite, the Mustang!
