The Nurburgring Has Finally Lifted Its Speed Restrictions
After receiving the go ahead from the International Automobile Federation (FIA) and the German motor sport association (DMSB), the Nurburgring has finally taken the decision to remove the speed limits that were imposed last summer.
The speed limits were initially introduced after Jann Mardenborough’s horrific accident at last year’s VLN Endurance race. At the incredibly quick Flugplatz corner, Mardenborough’s Nissan GT-R Nismo GT3 became airborne, flipping over the protective fence and landing in a spectator’s area. One person was killed with four others injured. Both the FIA and DMSB recognised that the iconic circuit required major safety improvements.
Thankfully, the Nordschleife now complies with the mandatory international and national safety regulations. ‘Metallic fences’ have been added to high-risk corners to add ‘additional FIA lines of protection’, and a restricted zone for spectators has been implemented at the super fast Schwedenkreuz section. A whole 500 metres of track surface at the Flugplatz and Quiddelbacher Höhe sections has also been completely reworked.
The speed limits were not popular with drivers or with manufacturers, so this is good news for competitors taking part at the first VLN race of the 2016 season on 2 April. The circuit is also open for vehicle testing, so perhaps we’ll finally get to see the Koenigsegg One:1 go after the Porsche 918’s incredible time of 6m 57s.

unfortunately I have to tell you that nobody cares about the viper
I’d love to see both.
Those two are my unicorn cars.
I like to see both too. But to this ACR thingy going on, I think the ACR won´t do anything special. It lost so much to porsche 918 in Salomondrins video.
Finally…
Weren’t those people hit by the car past one of the safety barriers in the first place?
Yes they were
Yes!
Catnipsegg gunna crush some records! ;)
CAPTAIN READY THE STAGE 2 LEG BOOSTERS
So what exactly is the nurburgring? Is it a racetrack or is it a public road? ‘Cause if it’s a racetrack I find it crazy to have a speed limit. Then again I feel like it’s a public road because it seems like they let anyone on the track with no experience or instructors. Plus they send out motorbikes, cars all at once. So can someone clear up my confusion?
If memory serves me correctly it’s both a race track and a toll road. Obviously not open as a road when there’s racing going on, but i believe it is the rest of the time.
