Porsche Has Trademarked 'GT5', But For What Car?

Given the historic success of the 911 GT3, and the fact that the fervour surrounding the Cayman GT4 caught Porsche off guard, it’s perhaps no surprise to discover the German manufacturer is hoping to cash in on the GT name. Autocar is reporting that Porsche has been granted the trademark ‘GT5’, but is remaining tight-lipped about what car it’ll be applied to.

So what car will be getting in on the GT action? Early rumours suggest a hardcore version of the Panamera or Macan could be in the works, however we reckon that’s unlikely given that the Panamera is a big luxury boat that wouldn’t adapt well to track life, and while the Macan Turbo is a surprisingly brilliant steer, turning the crossover into a track-prepped beast would be an odd transformation. GT-ifying these cars would require a deviation in what a Porsche GT car’s ethos is.

Last month it was revealed that Porsche was looking into the possibility of creating a Boxster Spyder GT, so we’d suggest the project has been given the green light and will be called GT5. It’d make sense, as first and foremost the Boxster is a much better base for a GT car. Secondly, GT car numbers traditionally associate with the relevant motorsport series - e.g. the 911 GT3 races in the GT3 series - however there is no GT5 equivalent. Therefore if Porsche is working towards a ‘smaller car, bigger number’ nomenclature for GT cars, it’d fit the bill: 911 GT3, Cayman GT4, Boxster Spyder GT5.

This is all conjecture, of course, as Porsche refuses to comment. The idea of a Boxster Spyder GT has us just as excited as it did when we first heard about it last month, but to be honest, the prospect of a hardcore Macan is perhaps even more intriguing. Stay tuned…
