Porsche Is Officially Ditching Diesel For Good

Having dropped diesel-engined vehicles from its range earlier this year, Porsche has now confirmed it won't be producing any in the future

Getting a sense of deja vu? We don’t blame you. Porsche did indeed drop all of its diesel-engined vehicles from the range earlier this year, but this latest piece of news is slightly different.

The Stuttgart-based company never confirmed if it was ditching diesel for good, and there had been some expectation for the company’s new Cayenne to eventually adopt diesel engines. Now, though, Porsche has announced that it will “no longer offer diesel propulsion in future.”

In a press release, the company noted that just 12 per cent of its sales in 2017 were diesel-powered, and with a shift towards hybrid and fully-electric vehicles, oil-burners just aren’t on the agenda anymore. In fact, it’s planning on pumping €6 billion of investment into “e-mobility,” part of which involves the production of the Taycan, the first Porsche EV.

Speaking about Porsche’s diesel dumping, company CEO Oliver Blume said:

“Porsche is not demonising diesel. It is, and will remain, an important propulsion technology. We as a sports car manufacturer, however, for whom diesel has always played a secondary role, have come to the conclusion that we would like our future to be diesel-free. Naturally we will continue to look after our existing diesel customers with the professionalism they expect.”

electric>diesel

i dont get the point of diesels these days.
10-20 years ago, i can see the demand, as they used to get almost double the MPG of petrols, and the torque produced made them perfect for trucks and SUVs like the LR Defender or Land Cruisers.

but theyre soo rough, and vibrate more than an 4.0 earthquake and honestly, are just so unrefined!
and Petrols these days arent too far behind Diesel in mileage tbh

Yeah. Plus, more pollution, which is something with should care about to an extent. Petrol is better is almost every way, and I don’t think I’ll ever own a diesel truck or car.

Did you ever drive a diesel? Modern diesel engines are really refined and still cant be beat in mileage by a petrol car. I daily a diesel and tbh its the best decision Ive made - smooth ride and real good mpg. I understand the downsides but for somebody who does a daily commute of 50km (~30 miles) it just is remains the best choice.

Even though Vauxhall’s new 1.6 diesel has been heavily praised for how quiet and smooth it is?
Still can’t beat a diesel for MPG though, you find me a petrol that can do 500miles on 20Litres of fuel in the real world!

I don’t think you’ve experienced real diesels… drive a Duramax, cummins or powerstroke and I’m sure you’ll see why diesels are a big deal

In a future of EVs petrol does have a place, but diesel? Nope.
