Racing Game Or First Person Shooter: Why Not Both?

Developer Bongfish studio knows that racers and shooters don't always agree, so they've brought us Calibre 10: a hybrid racing game to make us all get along

If racing at top speeds to take first place doesn’t quite hit your thrill button, why not try mixing it up with some incoming fire? That’s presicely what you get with Calibre 10 Racing Series. This game combines shooting action with track races in a scenario where players form four teams of two, each with one driver and one shooter. If you have friends who love first person shooters but haven’t got into racing, this could be their gateway into the world of driving games.

Calibre 10 Racing Series is the spiritual successor to the game Harms Way, which was built in 2010 for the Doritos ‘Unlock Xbox’ competition. Although the team did not win the competition, they received huge recognition and support from the gaming community to develop and launch a similar game. In May of this year, the third alpha version was released via the Steam Early Access program. This gives gamers the chance to buy the game early, report bugs, give their input on development and upgrade freely to newer versions as they become available. While you’re logged into your Steam account, make sure you head here and join the Car Throttle Steam Community so we can chat more about all your favourite games, and you can find fellow petrolheads to compete against online.

In order to be the first team across the finish line in this game, you’ll not only need great driving skills, but a good shooter too. This player will have your back by fighting for the best turret position to take out other racers and turrets. Shooters can take aim from Gatling, Sniper or Missile turrets that are stationary, on a rail or even hovering. A new addition to the game is the health gun which shooters can use to pump health back into their teammate’s vehicle.

In the final release, the vehicles, turrets and tracks will all have progressive statuses with more features in each. The ranks are Calibre Class One through Ten. Tracks at the highest level are the most difficult, and the highest turret level has the most destructive firepower. Calibre Class 10 vehicles have more horsepower, better handling and more countermeasures. If you’re good enough to make it to Calibre Class 10, you will be playing against some pretty heavy competition.

Calibre 10 brings a unique concept, detailed backgrounds and graphics good enough to keep our attention. What really strikes us is the work behind the vehicle designs. The Bongfish team has quite a few petrolheads in their studio who take a great interest in concept car design. They have teamed up with concept car artists like Shane Baxley, who designed their first supercar and first set of turrets, seen above. The Bongfish team says “we are working with top concept car designers from around the world to create racing vehicles that no one has ever seen before.” The studio’s ultimate goal is to form a community to foster concept car design and join the Steam Workshop for vehicles and weapons. Any creative minds out there, be sure to give Bongfish a shout.
