Sponsored Video: The Story Behind Audi's TT RS 5 Cylinder Engine

One of the meanest TT money can buy, now comes with a sob story

With added pressure on car emissions and yawn-worthy CO2 limits which manufacturers are keen to champion (remember the horsepower wars?), one thing is evident - there are a crapload of engines available to choose from as a buyer. From Volkswagen's TFSI plant to miraculous 3-cylinders to bi-tri-quad turbo blowers, you've got your work cut out if you're wanting an easy purchase.

But there are some engines that are steeped in history. And Audi's 5 cylinder is one of those. Harking back from 1989 and to Audi's memorable year in motorsport racing, the German manufacturer have released an emotional, visceral video telling the story of Hans-Joachim Stuck's journey to podium superstardom, stemming from the revolutionary 5-cylinder engine.

Back then, race cars were used to housing heavy V8s, so the removal of 3 cylinders allowed for lighter engines, and completely different car dynamics (later braking into corners being one). But more importantly, that technology has been carried through the ages (all 23 years) and has now ended up in the top-of-the-range TT, the RS. This car sprints to 60mph in 3.6 seconds thanks to 335 horsepower.

So soak it up, listen to the wasteplate turbo growls and watch a pretty captivating story on why the 5 cylinder is strongly placed in the DNA of cars.
