Surprise: The Next Porsche Macan Will Be Electric Only

It didn’t seem that long ago that Porsche was pulling the sheet off its very lightly facelifted first-generation Macan, but already, Stuttgart has made an announcement about the second-gen version of the crossover. And it’s a doozy: it turns out the next Macan will be reinvented as an all-electric SUV.

It’s a huge deal because the Macan is a massive seller for Porsche - it’s the company’s best-selling car, and in 2018 it comfortably sold in bigger numbers than the 911 and Panamera combined. Porsche is clearly confident about its electric powertrain tech, which we’ll see first in the Taycan.

The Taycan will arrive at the tail end of the year, followed in 2020 by the production version of the Mission E Cross. The EV Macan will arrive in 2021 as Porsche’s third all-electric vehicle, no doubt using a similar twin-motor powertrain to the Taycan and E Cross. It’ll be built at the firm’s Leipzig facility, which is being remodeled as its base for electric vehicle development and production.

Speaking about the move, Porsche AG chairman of the board Oliver Blume said:

“By 2022 we will be investing more than six billion euros in electric mobility, and by 2025 50% of all new Porsche vehicles could have an electric drive system. Nevertheless, over the next ten years we will focus on a drive mix consisting of even further optimised petrol engines, plug-in hybrid models, and purely electrically operated sports cars. Our aim is to take a pioneering role in technology, and for this reason we will continue to consistently align the company with the mobility of the future.”
