There's A 104-Day Supply Of Honda Accords, Because They're Not Selling

Underwhelming sales mean that Honda currently has a surplus stock of its latest saloon in the USA

By any measure, the new Honda Accord is a very good car. It’s the North American Car of the Year for one thing, and if you want, you can even have it with a detuned Civic Type R engine complete with a short-throw manual ‘box. Happy days.

The trouble is, saloons have fallen out of favour with new car buyers worldwide, largely thanks to the rise of the crossover. However accomplished it may be, the Accord isn’t immune, and sales have slow. In fact, Automotive News reports that the inventory of unsold Accords is so high, Honda has a 104-day supply to play with in the United States as of 1 March. Some dealers are even turning down shipments from the Japanese manufacturer’s Marysville, Ohio plant, because their stock levels are already much higher than usual.

Dealers across the country are reportedly pinning the blame on a lack of decent leasing deals. It certainly doesn’t help that the new Accord is more expensive than the old one, potentially putting off owners trading up from the previous generation when they’re presented with higher monthly payments.

There's A 104-Day Supply Of Honda Accords, Because They're Not Selling

In a statement to Automotive News, a Honda spokesperson said:

“We continue to work collaboratively with our dealer partners and appreciate our ongoing dialogue with them to ensure the overall value proposition with each of our products is competitive in the marketplace.”

However unloved the Accord may be in the US, it could be worse: demand for saloons is so weak in the UK, that Honda won’t ever bother bringing the car here.

Thanks, crossover lovers. Thanks a lot…

Crossovers are killing the variety

Since when is a Honda Accord an example for variety? It’s a mid-sized four-door sedan, it doesn’t get any less various than that.

What are the odds that the they revive the Honda crosstour?

Probably not. But in the Accord’s case, it’s not really the crossovers that are killing sales, it’s the Civic sedan. I see them EVERYWHERE. When I saw one for the first time, I seriously thought it was a new Accord until I read the badge. People are just buying the Civic Sedan which is a way cheaper way to get a 4-door Honda

I really hope this crossover/SUV bubble bursts before it claims the lives of yet more interesting cars. I’m already losing sleep over the prospect of a “Z SUV” from Nissan or the use of the “Mach 1” Title on a Ford electric crossover.

This is the thing I particularly don’t understand, why do car brands ruin such iconic names and put them in something that they sure should know it won’t be apreciated by the fans of the brand?? Mach 1, Z suv, Evolution, Eclipse, what’s next, the future Ferrari SUV getting the Testarossa name??

If “NO ONE asked for them “ why do they sell like hotcakes?

If I could travel back in the past, I would kill the guy responsible for the development of qashqai, the mother of crossovers.

Crossovers existed long before that (Pontiac Aztec, Rover Streetwise etc.) - Although it was the Qashqai that popularised them on a massive scale.

The Accord might not be selling that well but I’ve seen SOO many on the road and it’s very good looking!

Oh my god, stop blaming crossovers for everything! The market wants crossovers so that is what the market is going to get! It’s not the manufacturers fault, if they don’t build them, they will not be profitable and go bankrupt.

I’m with you on this one. Simple demand and supply.

If none were produced, none would be bought and so they wouldn’t have such a high market share.

I dont understand why prople love crossovers so much…. Lack of space in back seats, stulidly high for no reasson so you cant have as much fun in the corners as you should, and ofc if you want to put that hight in use you’ll definitely stuck in first mud…

Not saying I love crossovers or anything, but:

  1. What crossover has small back seats? Other than sub compact ones, they should be on par if not bigger than a similarly sized hatch/sedan
  2. No one is buying crossovers for their handling or performance in mud. If anything, the height is just for practical purposes.
A crossover is a good choice for many people, just because they may not fit your needs or ideals doesn’t mean they’re terrible vehicles.

Crossovers are a way of owning a minivan/people-carrier that’s actually sort of cool. They often look decently agressive and their designs can be attractive, but they’re tall, very spacious and can often fit 7, all while keeping the economy of a fwd hatchback. 99% of the times they aren’t supposed to go off-road, they just look like it for aesthetic reasons (no one wants to be seen driving a VW Sharan).

I’m not a fan of crossovers and don’t see myself owning one at all, but I can see why they’re popular.
