Fords Focus ST 2.0 L Duratec Ti-VCT I4 GDI.
It’s fitted with a Borg-Warner K03 which is small but the torque is great.
Not to mention it can be tuned and modified for more HP & torque while also being reliable.

Either a 4G63T or a 3S-GTE. Both are pretty damn reliable.

My pick goes to Toyota’s 1NZ-FE engine family.
It’s such a good engine, Toyota’s been using this engine in many of their models, from the Echo to the Yaris to the Scion xA/xB for the last 15 years!
Did I also mention that it powers the famours Prius in a modifided form? (1NZ-FXE tuned to simulate an Attkinson cycle)
It’s efficient (gets 35 mpg-40 mpg), reliable (i’ve only heard of one failing so far, at 475k miles) and it produces a solid 106 bhp. (I know not all that impressive)

Overall I have to go with the F20C with the B18 from the ITR as a runner up. SR20DETs deserve some credit too for modification abiliity as well as balance. The VW/Audi 2.0T, Mitsubishi 4G63(T) and turbo Subaru boxer motors also deserve a spot. For a modern choice, the new Volvo dual charged (turbo and super) motor is pretty ridiculous.

This may be a wild card but The cummins 4bt, being mainly in generators, fork lifts, work trucks, it may not have the flash of a honda f20, but it gets work done. And last forever seeing minimal maitance.

I think the Cosworth 4-bangers in Caterhams deserve a mention here.
