Going to side with sr20de/t highly tunable, but still gives quite the punch when stock(breaks driveshafts from my own experience) And for money you just don’t get more than with this engine.

rover k series 1.4 with 103 bhp and the only problem is everything 45k miles on it

I prefer 5 or more cylinders…
But if I have to pick a 4 cylinder, B230FT. Never driven a car with one, but I want one. Many say it’s one of Volvo’s best engines.
