The US Wants To Massively Reduce German Car Imports

Donald Trump wants to massively cut the number of German cars being sold in America, according to reports in German media.

In a meeting with European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker and European Council President Donald Tusk, where journalists were present, the American President is quoted as saying:

“The Germans are bad, very bad. See the millions of cars they are selling in the US. Terrible. We will stop this.”

Several German newspapers have reported the quotes, along with suggesting that the current American government ‘still doesn’t understand’ that the EU is unable to renegotiate trade deals on a country-by-country basis.

President Trump has previously said that he would tax German manufacturers an additional 35 per cent if they wanted to sell cars in the US, making them vastly more expensive than any American rivals.

We can’t imagine that VAG, BMW Group and Mercedes are too pleased at the idea, but ultimately it could be counter-productive for America anyway if the wealthy German companies invest in jobs elsewhere instead. We have to wonder how Trump might like the sound of billions of dollars being pumped into China instead of the US, but hey, we’re not politicians.

So how is a 29 percent tax on American cars fair but a tax for German cars is unthinkable?

Is he suggesting this for German cars only, or all the European brands?

As a Volswagen enthusiast, I hate the sound of this.
Its simple: German cars > American cars.

I’m a patriot, but this is rediculous. This is something out of a socialist country, not a capitalist democratic-republic. The core of capitalism is the law of supply and demand. If the consumer does not want to purchase a certain good, the company is supposed to make their products better than their competitors, not have the government bail them out for their failures to follow the market. Capitalism is all about trying to out-do your competitors in sales, quality, and marketing, not cry like a spoiled child when someone threatens your business because they’re offering a better product at a better price. This is utter foolishness of the corporations if you ask me.

To be honest, this is better than taxing cars above a certain price… yes, Australia, I’m looking at you.
The LCT we have in Australia comes in effect at cars worth $68,184 and above. At that price point (and beyond) cars will be charged a 33% tax. If I’m not mistaken, this was done to protect the local car industry… now look what happened to us now!

And yes, the Holden Caprice and HSV models (which are locally built) cost above the threshold, so this tax is just an excuse from the government to take our money and do jacksh*t with it.

What I find ironic is that he owns a s600 pullmann, and was the first person to drive a R8 in the US.
