The Volkswagen Corrado VR6 Is The Investment Piece You Can Still Drive For Fun

Scarcity, charisma, pace and appreciating values? The Volkswagen Corrado VR6 has it all, and it's the kind of car you won't even have to put in storage to preserve - you'll get your money back regardless

You’ve got to be blind and deaf not to see the appeal in the Volkswagen Corrado VR6, and we think this one could be worth a much closer look.

It was the pick of the range, the most exciting by far despite its heavier nose and tendency to wash wide if you were ambitious with corner entry speeds. The European-spec 2.9-litre V6 was good for 187bhp, which was plenty in this 1274kg shell, but it was its character that made this car a legend.

Ride the loud pedal and the Vee-Reihenmotor – literally ‘vee-inline engine’ – plays a mechanical symphony all on its own. Compact in design, the single-block narrow-angle V6 was famously good to listen to, filling the Corrado’s boxy, early-nineties good looks with enough muscle to let it punch well above its weight.

The Corrado VR6 was a little fighter; a naughty car for a naughty driver, and plenty have been crashed over the years. Prices are starting to creep upwards, though, and now could be the best time to buy. We found this one quickly enough, in its interesting shade of lilac blue. It looks to be in very sound condition for its 117,000 miles. The seller says there’s no rust and there’s history stretching back to 2005, which does mean the 1994 car’s first 11 years are missing, but hey, you can’t have everything.

The door handles have been replaced for more modern items to improve the chances of them working properly next time you come to open the doors, and central locking seems to have come along for the trip. There are three original keys (plus two more modern flip-keys for the central locking) and there’s a cheeky stainless steel exhaust system poking out of the back. It’s a tasteful one, too.

While the wheels are a little rough around the edges and the gearbox apparently has some issues, the Corrado is an old-fashioned thing that you could work on at home if you have the space and skill. The seller is asking for £4000 or a close offer. With a little love and attention, this could be a very tidy investment.

I literally have never seen a classified ad for a Corrade VR6 that hasn’t been dodgy in one way or another.

I’ve seen some really pristine ones that run upwards of 20K. One even hit 30

find me a nice one for under 10k and I’d buy it in a heartbeat, even if I had to give up my dream car for it

If you can find a G60 Supercharged version, that’s meant to be a great steer

Alternatively you could buy a MK3 VR6 Jetta, put a bit of money into parts, and have a sleeper.
