This Volvo Driver Rammed A Cyclist For No Good Reason, And Got Away With It
The driver of this Volvo appears to speed up before slamming into a cyclist and leaving the scene. Because it was a hire vehicle, police said they couldn't determine the identity of the driver
This shocking crash happened November last year in Nottingham, and was severe enough to cause internal haemorrhaging and back injuries for the victim. It took him four months to recover from the injuries, but the real sting in the tale came when Nottingham Police were unable to prosecute the driver, as the Volvo XC60 was revealed to be a hire vehicle.
Instead, a man eligible to drive the car at the time - quite possibly the perpetrator - got away with just a £150 fine and six penalty points for “failing to provide driver details.” A woman was also eligible to drive at the time, but the Crown Prosecution Service deemed that there wasn’t enough evidence to determine who was behind the wheel.

So cyclists also have dashcams now?
Many of them have these days. :-)
Yes we have them, I don’t because I’m broke. But yes, cyclists do for maniacs or Americans.
I am American
Wait, so you’re telling me the police can’t figure out who was driving said car at the time? Can’t they just ring the rental company and ask for a schedule of who was hiring the car at the time?
Problem is, just because someone’s name is on the rental papers, that doesn’t count as proof that the person was driving the car at the time. I have had several rental cars over the years, and on more than one occasion I have let a friend, or family member use the car for a little errand. With out proof of who was behind the wheel, charges could be potentially filed on an innocent person.
(Hypothetically) Say you rented a car, and you let a family member, or friend borrow it for a short moment because it was parked behind his car, and you didn’t want to bother moving it. They hit someone and ran, and the victim only has the license plate. Would you be fine that you get charged for the hit and run all because your name was on the rental papers?
I dont condone what he did but, If your a cyclist and you’re riding in the middle of the road when there is room to be to the side and you still ride in the middle of the road I will be angry. I see this too much in my city
You do know that cyclists HAVE TO ride in the middle of the lane sometimes right? this is basic knowledge that you should have before you are given the right to drive a car.
Volvo, safe cars. So you can drive like a morron
What do you mean “for no good reason”? He was a cyclist, I don’t see a better reason to ram someone.
Are you kidding me? Please tell me you are joking.
Down voting the post above, its never ok to intentionally harm another human like that.
Not everyone can say they have lived through being hit by a tank.
well at least they picked a car they would survive it in.
I would honestly not be surprised if the driver was trying to test the automatic braking system. Not always a good idea. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_8nnhUCtcO8
City Safety is standard on the XC60, but I’m not positive that it includes pedestrian and cyclist detection (It could easily be an added option). I’ve seen radars on the grilles of the newer XC60 (Which the Volvo in your video and the video in the post didn’t have), so I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s the system to detect people and cyclists.
Even if it worked, why would ever want the car to moving that fast towards you? Even if it’s only a test. Cars only stop so quickly.
This particular vehicle did not come with Pedestrian detection functionality equipped. The Volvo XC60 comes with City Safety as a standard feature however this does not include the Pedestrian detection functionality.
There is a special place in hell for people who do this kind of thing
I feel sorry 4 a guy on bicycle, but what a hell was he doing in middle of road? Go to side of road!
he was in the middle of the road because he was on a bike. that is where bikes go. cycling on the side of the road is only a courtesy not a rule. if there isnt space to overtake then cyclists SHOULD ride in the middle of the lane to make it absolutely clear.
