The VW Scirocco Might Be Killed Off After The Current Generation Ends

The VW Scirocco Might Be Killed Off After The Current Generation Ends

The VW Scirocco is a fine looking car, but it’s not exactly cutting edge. Peel away the coupe-ish hatchback body, and you’ll find the ancient gizzards of the Mk5 Golf. So, it’s well overdue a replacement, but unfortunately it’s looking like that might not happen.

Autocar reports that at VW’s Annual Session, the subject of replacing the Scirocco and Mk6 Golf-related Beetle hard top was raised. The response wasn’t a particularly promising one. VW brand board member Arno Antlitz is quoted as saying: “The Beetle and Scirocco are representatives of an emotional and appealing class of vehicles, but it is not always about continuing cars from one generation to the next.”

Both the tin top Beetle and the Scirocco are poor sellers for VW, so it’d be understandable for the firm to axe the pair as it seeks to cut costs and streamline in the stupidly expensive wake of the dieselgate scandal. The considerably more popular convertible Beetle is understood to be safe.

Antlitz reckons that the incoming Arteon saloon and the production versions of the I.D. cars will plug the ‘emotional’ gap left by any Scirocco and/or Beetle departure.

This new comes just a week after it was reported that the Group was mulling over a sale of the Ducati brand - owned by Audi subsidiary Lamborghini.

They could have done so much with it. Make a new one based off of the new golf, better suspension, and a little more power. And maybe a hybrid version. Or a full electric. Putting the batteries underneath would improve the handling, and combined with the torque if an electric motor, it would be a fun car.

Out here in the lowlands the Scirocco has already met its maker. Apparently people here don’t see the point of a slightly more attractive squashed Golf with less interior room. Especially with that dreadful rear end. Who would’ve known?

Why do I have a feeling when you said “that dreadful rear end” you though the second picture is the actual rear end of the Scirocco.
Please tell me I’m wrong and you know the actual rear end of the Scirocco actually looks like this:

Got to hand it to Volkswagen, their determination to hold on to as much of their empire as possible is ballsy. With General Motors carefully dismantling itself and Toyota’s growth prospects pretty stagnant it looks like VW’s global domination is secure for years to come.
