3S-GE, a bit underrated engine.
The Gen 1 3S-GE can be found on toyota corona/caldina, Toyota Celica GT-S (ST-162), and Toyota Camry. It has the power output of 135bhp from the factory.
Gen 2 3S-GE was produced in 1990- 1993, it is slightly more powerful and reliable than the Gen 1.
Gen 3 3S-GE, produced in 1994-1999, it has a higher compression ratio of 10:3:1 and power out put of 178bhp (japan) and 168bhp @7000rpm
The Gen 4 3S-GE, also known as BEAMS (Breakthrough Engine Advanced Mechanism System) There are Versions of the Gen 4 3S-GE. First one being the red top. It began production in 1997. It featured VVT-i and has a power output of 197bhp @7000rpm (manual), and 187 bhp @7000 rpm (Auto). It was available in few models sold only in Japan such as the MR2 G and G - Limited, celica ST202, and the caldina
Another version of Gen 4 3S-GE was the Grey top, it was an engine option for the RAV 4 and Gen 2 caldina active sport GT. It was named after the coloring of its intakr plenum to avoid confusion among the Gen 5 black top. The power output of the Grey Top is 178hp @ 6600rpm for the Rav4 and 187hp in the Caldina GT
Gen 5 3S-GE. It was released in 1998 and can only be found in the japanese delivered Altezza RS200. It was nicknamed blacktop and it featured Dual VVT-i that adjusted timing on both camshafts and came in two different spec on what tranny it is connected to
It has the power output of 197 hp @ 7000rpm in the 5-speed auto and 207 hp @7600rpm in the manual.
