So, how much HP do you need to do simple drifting?

Me and my friend had an argument about drifting with low-powered cars. My friend said that you need at least 160bhp to drift. I told him that you can drift with a car that has under 100bhp, but he said that it’s impossible. I mean you can just clutch-kick and go.. please tell this to my friend.

Technically you could but it depends on a lot more than that: tires, gearing ratio, power and torque band of the engine, weight of the car, stiffness of the suspension and if the car has a locking diff or not

Drifting is not really power-based, what counts is the weight, torque and skill of the driver ;)

I have a buddy that drifts his Merc 190, with 120hp, and a open diff. I however struggle with my volvo 940 that has 170hp. It really only comes down to practice, and not so much the car.

I mean, if you can do a burnout you should be fine. Weld the diff and go.
