Ban ICE Cars As Soon As EVs Become Cheaper, Say Experts
A formal advisory committee has told the UK government to bring its 2040 ban on the sale of new internal combustion-powered cars forward by 10 years.
The Committee on Climate Change, an independent body formed in 2008 to help guide government policy on emissions, wants the ban to coincide with the 2030 date at which it predicts that EVs will be cheaper to buy than equivalent petrol- and diesel-engined cars.
In a report presented to the government this week, the CCC says that to meet targets to make all cars zero-emission by 2050, new car sales must be electric-only by no later than 2035, but preferably 2030.
The new recommendations implicitly include all types of hybrid in the proposed 2030 ban, as opposed to the existing 2040 ban, which excludes all hybrids classed as ‘ultra-low-emissions vehicles,’ which basically means plug-in hybrids only.
However, the CCC report also notes the UK’s woefully inadequate public charging infrastructure. It estimates than a tenfold increase in the current 21,000 chargers will be needed by 2030 to support the switch to EVs, plus 3500 of the very fastest types of chargers for motorway-based charging stations.
The government doesn’t have to base policy on the report but is likely to take it seriously. Other suggestions covered emissions reductions in home-heating, the aviation and farming industries, and domestic waste disposal.

Never said it banned the sale of used ICE cars
Yeah I don’t see how they can ban their use - if they go down that track they’ll need huge subsidies and so many people can’t afford to upgrade.
All the desirable ice cars’ resale value is going to skyrocket with the ban, itll be a new drift tax lol
Indeed - I’m going to bring my ICE car out on weekends and blast it up and down… 😛🚗💨
They will soon enough. However, given the average lifespan of a new car in the UK is only five years (we buy new cars VERY frequently here), it wont be long before the “used” cars for sale will be mostly electric. Everything else will be registered as a classic or scrapped.
F* what experts say!!
Pretty sure that these “experts” have no idea how science works and are only make claims based on the battery progress.
Any news of oil being discovered on Mars? I’d like to move there instead.
Kinda hard to drive on Mars with lower gravity and no roads lol
Will they buy one for me then?
Tbh I’d be ok with this if it reduced the amount of green house gases in the atmosphere. Apparently we got 11 years before there’s no turning back with climate change
Ya. Honestly I would rather drive an electric car (I like them tho) than die. Like people need some common sense.
Wanna read about how experts said the next ice age is coming about 30 years ago? There is so much politics and money involved that it’s hard to believe anything. I mean guess how they pay the scientists who do all the research. Also there’s a huge pressure on scientists to get papers published that get citated often. So better have some climate change info in your paper or your carreer will go nowhere.
I am a big free market fan, and if by 2030 electric vehicles are cheaper than ICE cars, then they will already sell significantly higher than ICE cars. Thus a ban isn’t really necessary. All that the ban will do is prevent the sales of drivers cars because those will be the ones that will still be better as ICE cars. That is a pretty small part of the market, so why bother. Just let the free market do its thing
EV’s won’t prevail, Hydrogen powered cars are the future
Are they though? Far less efficient since you have to use huge amounts of energy to get the hydrogen - several times more than you get from the hydrogen fuel cell or engine.
Don’t forget that you need quite an infrastructure to run a large amount of hydrogen powered cars. That’s an advantage of EVs, the infrastructure they need is not very complex and therefore not very expensive to built. I have some doubts if hydrogen cars have a future or not…
Looks like I’m buying something retro
They should invent portable chargers for evs
[DELETED]
These so-called experts are clearly out of touch with reality. If all new cars were EV’s, eventually the cheap used car will cease to be a thing, as they’d barely last 10 years. And then people who don’t have the disposable income to spend on a new car will be without transport.
Why would they last 10 years ?
Cars over 20 years old require a lot of maintenance now and are pretty simple.
When current cars are 20 years old they will be worse.
Electirc cars are quite simple, they will not need thar much maintenance and in 20 years the battery replacement problems will be resolved
People will be convinced to want EVs, so there is not much thst can be done unfortunately.
