Porsche 911 GT3 vs Porsche Cayman GT4

I am a massive fan of Porsches. Especially with their GT models. They’re such an incredible cars to drive around. I own a 911 GT3 and I recently test drove Jeremy van der Veldt’s Cayman GT4. Being completely honest here, they both are surprisingly similar when it comes to how they drive. So, now I present you: Porsche 911 GT3 vs Porsche Cayman GT4.

First, I want to go to the Cayman first…

My Review

The GT4 is an absolute blast to drive. Its got the 3.8L flat-6 engine from the 991 Carrera S. Engine swaps, yo! Actually, not only the engine that is from the 991, it’s also the suspension and many others. So it’s basically a “Cayman 911”. And because this thing has a lot of parts taken from the 911 GT3, this thing handles very similarly. Is there any difference at all? Yes. The 991 GT3 starts at $131,395 MSRP. The Cayman GT4? $85,595. So, this is the poor man’s GT3? Theoretically, it is. But will I call it the poor man’s 911 GT3? No. Fully loading a GT4 could take you at around $130k. That’s almost double the base price. The steering feels very nice. It has a rack-pinion steering which feels very nice around some tight places. How does it feel on the Autobahn? Jerry took it to about 240 kph and he’s just chillin’ with that thing. The GT4 is a manual-only car which is a great news for the guys that are looking for a track car for under $100,000. Have I driven a GT3 on the Autobahn? No. How does it feel on the track? I’ve never took that thing on a track before but Jerry has and he said:

“Het is geweldig. De auto voelt alsof het in zijn natuurlijke habitat. De snelheid en versnelling van de Cayman GT4 is absoluut brutaal”

Translation: “The car feels like it’s in its natural habitat, the speed and acceleration is amazing”

So, the car is destined to be driven on the track. FOR JUST $85k! Now that is absolutely amazing. Is it practical? It has 2 boots, one in the front and another one in the rear. Each of them are not huge at all but when you combine them, they could fit a lot of things. Oh yeah, the GT4 is also a Shmeemobile…..

My Review

This. This is a real 911. This is a real 911 GT3. The car is an absolute dream. The 991 GT3 is powered by a 3.8 liter flat-6 which is not derived from anything. So this is a genuine car. However, it does cost $131,395 base MSRP. So damn pricey. Is it worth it? Well, the GT4 and the GT3 drives very similarly so……it’s a bit of a yes-no. No. It’s not the same. Why? It’s more powerful, quicker, and more fun. How’s the practicality? Less practical because you don’t have a rear boot, only the front and it’s not that big. However, the 911 is bigger and it has more rear space than the GT4 so, you can squeeze a lot of stuff on the back. How does it drive on the track? Great. The cornering speed that you can carry is just absolutely amazing. You also have the grip and confidence when you want to put the power down and the brakes are absolutely magnificent. There is one thing that I wanted. One thing. Manual gearbox. It is a shame that you can’t get the track focused GT3 with a manual. I hope that it will become available again in the future.
