One month owning a Volvo 940

well I am in pretty much exactly one month of ownership of this hearse =). It is my daily driving machine and I am pretty proud of it.
I had every one of the holy trinity of European station wagons:

I started with the W124 250d (above picture not my car), then i bought 2 E34 520i Touring and now one month ago the 940.

I can say that all three of these cars were very good in their own way. I am 26 and I recently bought my 12th car overall (6 of these were crap cars for a few months only) and I miss every station wagon I had. The W124 was phenominal on long trips, it hold its line like no other, an even loading space with the seats folded down and comfort was great. Diesel consumption okay and performance was bad but still you got to your destination. The E34 s were great cars had good equipment and 2nd one was with lpg the cheapest car to run. And the E34 were handling wise on top but the loading space was the lowest amount, the suspension made problems all the time and Vanos was broken since the beginning I owned the second E34 520. This car had a few quirks like seperately open bootlid:

and the car did a great job on road trips and loading space was still sufficiently enough to sleep carry two bikes and two people and in my opinion till now the E34 if it is in good condition is the best deal…but now to the Volvo:

the seats are really comfortable but compared to the other two cars, this seats are neither better or worse.

loading capacity from the Volvo is the biggest of the bunch thanks to its box shape and even flat folded rear seats… you can put a 140x200cm mattress into the rear with some adjustments in the wheel arches. In none of the other cars this would have fit.

so I and my brother drove in that month of ownership (I share it with my brother since he does not need a car often, but in that time he needed it for a long trip) we drove 3000 km. I averaged approximately 9.0 l/100km (as also seen on the image above 437km/half a tank (35l) and not the nanny driving style more backroads, but not too much city traffic, I live in a city but my means of transportation here are my feed not the car… parking spaces and fuel are just to expensive…just a small walk burning fat and saving money (and environment) same time is a good deal. So fuel economy is more than okay for a car that size.

the suspension….. the merc had awesome run in the straight, the BMW needed minor corrections, but very much made it up in the corners with no problem, the Volvo…… well solid rear axle has its` advantages, but on B Roads the car does not feel as connected to the road as the Merc or BMW to be honest. Multi Link Suspension in the BMW was the reason I sold it (one of them) because if sth. goes wrong your best option is to rob a bank. Here all parts are simply constructed last forever or are cheap to replace, so for reliability this is a definite advantage.

Styling: Well it seems the Volvo has friends everywhere. All my friends love it, my brother has been in Belgium with the car and he got several smiles and even some people complemented him for the car and I like the boxy no f*s given shape of the car, too. So yeah this styling is just legendary.

So in conclusion this Volvo is exactly what I expected: A comfortable, sort of hipster station wagon, which supports me with all my extra car hobbies and is most likely super reliable. The lack of power and not so direct suspension is a small price to pay, since I got two other cars that very well make up in these categories. All in all the perfect addition to my carpool, and right now I am glad I bought the Volvo =)
