Don’t know about reliability of the VR6 engine, although the golf 3 is quite reliable as i’ve experienced. I wouldn’t call it fast but with 176 hp for 1265 kg kerb weight i would call it quite quick. I seriously doubt you will get in someones way. Going back to the reliability part. Even if something breaks, parts for a Golf3 are usually dirt cheap (again, that maybe different for the VR6 engine parts).

I would seriously consider buying a VR6 golf, but only if it was a Syncro model, cause of 4 wheel drive and a little more power.

Thanks for the reply, here in Australia I am not allowed to drive anything turbo as of license restrictions so just looking for something n/a and fun to drive until i get full license. I love the styling, any idea on maintenance costs of something like this?

The VR6 is quite a reliable engine, but a lot of them got abused, so you should keep that in mind. Sure, it’s not the most powerful engine but the Golf isn’t heavy so you should be fine. Also, the sound these make is amazing :)

One thing you defienently need to keep an eye on is the timing chain! When driven a long mileage, they are going to brake, and if they do. you’ll be needing a new engine because they rip everything apart if they brake. But they are “easy” to change if you how to do it.Really love the car, beautiful engine, great sound even with stock exhaust, i say - go for it mate!

Thanks man, I have a good friend who is a mechanic so he can teach me to keep an eye on things like the timing chain, totally agree with that last sentence!
