DIY - Leather guard for gear shift lever

I suddenly had an urge to do something about my car’s sad looking interior and decided to start with the gear shift lever guard yesterday.
With enough determination, some planning, measuring, several hours spent swearing with the sewing machine and 15€ used on the materials.
It wasn’t very demanding but it did test my nerves a few times. Especially getting the shift knob out (and back on) was a rather simple but strenuous task. Rotating the knob 45 degrees and pulling it upwards.
“Should be easy enough.” - I thought, but the amount of force required to gain sufficient grip on the knob (in order to apply the rotating movement) could have easily strangled a person. not even mentioning how much force it required to make the damn thing turn.
Rest was just undoing plastic clips, torx screws, metal clamps and unplugging few cables to get the panel out, simple stuff.
With the old leather guard out I proceeded to take it fully apart to take the measurements for the (fake)leather pieces, which I had a pleasant time sewing together cough - sarcasm - cough.

And before installing everything back on I spent some time cleaning the hard-to-get-to places.
Working on the car’s interior is pretty comfortable in these French cars,

When I have the time I’ll give the shift knob some well deserved attention too ^^

You could polish the shift knob with some wood polishing oil (is it the right name?)

I think I’ll give it a light surface treatment (1000 - 2000 grid sandpaper) and apply a lacquer layer.
Polishing it might be over doing it, but I’ll see how it goes.

XM, Y4. Xantias have a handbrake lever on the center console and the radio unit(which is twice the size) is mounted higher ;)

Strats with a gear knob… Ends up with an engine swap 😂.

Awesome work with it btw! Looks amazing, the old leather kinda looked a bit tired

lol
While engine swap might be too far out there, a turbo is in the consideration for long term plan

Fantastic job and a fantastic car, I will be changing my gear knob and guard on my Y3 soon. Just stumbled on your post 5 years later.
