What oil should I be using for an EJ20?

I have an 03 WRX, and Im interested to hear what the best oil is? I’m not sure if I should be running synthetic or standard oil as it’s a turbo car. Any help would help as my first oil change after buying the car is coming up!

I would run a fully synthetic oil which is not to thin (everyhing from 5w… up) if your climate alows for it. As the boxer engines are likely to leak so a little bit of a thicker oil might be a good idea.
But if it’s the first oil change after buying it you might want to look through the paper work of the last service, what kind of Oil was used because if after 13 years of running Mineral Oil you change to a fully synthetic it could damage your engine.

Factory reccomended is 5w-30, rotella seems to be a popular choice as well, but ive used 5w-30 with no issues since ive had the car. Use full synth.

Where are you located.. if it isnt too cold use rotella t6 5w40.. some guys in one of my groups (so cal) have changed to schaffers 9000 5w40. Say they like it more. But for now i run t6 in my 04 wrx.

Because T6 is a diesel oil it can deteriorate your catalytic converters over time, if you burn oil like all subies do. No worries if your catless though

Can be dangerous if you still have the catted up pipe. If that starts to break up, it will send pieces through the turbo
