Gaming Wheel Setup: 3 Reasons why it's really worth it.

Circuit, Drag, Drifting,Rally… It’s not important wich one is your favorite, as a Petrolhead community, we all share the love for racing, Our blood hits the apex in every vein in our bodies, and our heart goes all the way to 10k rpm.
However, we can’t live in the racetrack, as i’m pretty sure most of us would love to. Family, Work, School, Not enough physical age, Trading your S2000 for a Polo, all that stuff leads us to suppress our geared, loud and fast nature.
Fortunately, we live in the 21st century, surrounded by an enormous empire. Gaming

Videogames are a great temporary exit of a stressful world, and fulfillers of that Need for Speed.
Racing games, more specifically, have come a long, loooong way. Compare childhood hero titles like “Gran Turismo 1” or “The Need For Speed” to today’s any racing game. Quite a gap, Huh?
That’s evolution for you. With evolution, things get better, and in this case, each year, games get closer and closer to a somewhat real life-ish experience. Not only the games, but also experience enhacing gadgets, and that leads me to why we’re here today. I know at this time of the year it’s easier to find some special offers in different items through the market, So i’ll talk about my personal experience with a racing wheel and videogames. Hope it helps, if anyone of you is one the fence of buying a racing wheel setup for your favorite racing videogame.

(I play Gran Turismo 6 with a Logitech G27 wheel & stand)

Turns games into a whole new experience.

The wheel is like another edition of “Extreme Makeover” show. Adds so much character and a mix of emotions to the game. I’ve been playing GT6 almost since launch. And It doesn’t matter how much I like the game, To be completely honest, It was getting pretty boring. With the wheel is now a scary, exciting crashing simulator.

It’s realistic enough.

While I’m totally aware this is not close to the joy and thrill of real life driving, it’s as close as we can get to drive that car we’ve always drooled for, without spending a big chunk of money in one of those high tech simulators, or in that matter, in getting the real car. It’s challenging to the point is still fun, and the satisfaction you feel when you notice your progress in your driving is totally priceless.

Smiles per pixelated gallon.

With a controller, Drive about 30 minutes and with basic knowledge of racing line, and oversteer/understeer control you’re setting lap records at the Nurburgring. I thought it’d be something like that with the wheel. Ohhh, how wrong I was.
With the proper game and FFB settings, racing with a wheel can be challenging. Don’t expect blistering fast times in the first couple days. You’ll crash, restart, and crash again, Still, something I found interesting, Is enjoyable to levels I still need to fully comprehend.
It’s not frustating like it is in the controller. You’ll be happy to restart the whole event and try to nail the apex faster this time.

Those are the main points I can think of now. It’s really an experience I think everyone should try.
TL;DR: Get a wheel, You’ll love it.

The Logitech Driving Force GT is affordable, and i’ve heard it’s a good wheel!
Also, G27s are very sturdy and very well built, so searching online for a used example could be an option aswell!

Get the Driving Force GT. I had it as my first wheel and I can safely say it´s the best bang for the buck. Once you get into this sim racing stuff you´ll want a better set of pedals though…

am a huge tuner and have some racing games and would like to try it without dumping big money(which i need to use for real car parts lol) Under $100 is what I’m looking for with the whole set up. Unless that’s unrealistic? not sure…

it is unless you want a crappy wheel like the Thrustmaster T80… I have the T150 with Wheelstand Pro, TH8A shifter, and T3PA Pedals, but it’s an expensive setup… ITS AWESOME THOUGH

I have a Driving Force GT with sequential shifter and only 2 pedals… Not bad for the buck though! I was going for that 900° rotation.

I totally agree with this. Since I bought my Fanatec CSR I can’t stand playing racing games with a controller or keyabord, they are so dull that way.

This post just says it all! :D been using my Driving Force GT for a long time now, can’t imagine racing without it. Even though Christmas brought a (delayed) upgrade to the Thrustmaster TX with new pedals and shifter

to everyone thinking along the lines of “I want a wheel, but something like a G27 is just too expensive, i’ll get something cheap and it will be good enough” Think of it this way. You could spend $50-$100 on something cheap and crappy (No force feedback, cheap plastics, less robust, paddle shift etc.) or spend the extra $100 and get something nice, with all of the features you want (FFB, 6-speed w/ clutch, high durability etc.) Realistically, you’re going to keep this wheel for a few years, and use it until it dies. If you think of it that way, what’s another $100 over the course of three or four years? I’ve had a G27 for the past two and a half years, and it still works just like the day I got it, and looking back, the use I got out of it has well surpassed the cost of buying it.

TL;DR, spend the extra money and get something good, you’re going to be stuck with it for a while.

I spent £230 on a Thrust TX 458, and the motor went in it after 2 hours use. But then that’s Thrustmaster. Beware.

I’d rather buy old rusty 1000$ car and drift and have fun with it than create ultimate racing simulator

Why not both. If you can afford a £1000 car, you can afford a simple but decent £150 wheel.

Thing is I bought a G27 and wheel stand pro, such an epic gaming setup but ended up selling it for car parts! If you do gaming though, make sure you do it properly…

Another G27 + GT6 player! The best fun to be had with that setup is the Corvette Z06 with about 650hp on Comfort: Soft tyres, trust me :D
