Is the 1987 C7 Corvette a good first car for me?

Im 16 in the US and I'm eligible for a driving permit and I'm close to getting a licence. I want to start driving as soon as I get my licence, and i think a C4 Corvette might be a suitable first car. But I want to know if this is a good idea or if I should look elsewhere

The reason i want this Corvette is because i want my first car to be cheap and practical yet sporty at the same time. I've browsed used car sites and ive seen these cars priced at around $8,000 USD, and ive heard that it gets around 22- 29 miles per gallon. So should i get this car when i get my licence?

If you have the experience and money to maintain it I’d say go for it

it’s a great car. they are reliable when treated right. my dad had a 1988 model in black, and it was a great car! just don’t go crazy with your buddies in this car, when you first start out driving it is tempting to speed and mess around on twisty roads. Don’t! Until you have a couple years behind the wheel. I’m 20 and still improving on the road.

I wouldn’t recommend it if you don’t have the time ( I mean hours in the garage ) and money to fix their very common electronic issues. It doesn’t have proposer fuel injection which makes it a headache. Better off with a 90’s, they have at least better stuff. If you wanna rwd car that is cheap and American. I recommend a 94-95 GT mustang. Still have a 302 which is cheap to work on and easy to fix in a day. Plus upgrades are easy. Explorer head intake and high injectors is good for 20-40hp.

If that was the UK it would cost around £1,000,000 to insure xD (for a first car)

Here in Canada (not sure about the states) we can register almost anything over the age of 30 as a historical vehicle or as a classic. That means cheap insurance 😉

The auto and manual transmissions stink
if I’m not mistaken. Crossfail injection. Buy a crown vic, v8, large, fun, cheap, reliable.

i wouldn’t not because of the car itself but for a few very different reasons. First you will get in trouble in a sportier car as a kid. trust me i own a Saturn and still did it, and its much easier to get out of a ticket when you tell the officer you were maxing your Saturn out at 120mph on the highway from curiosity (for anyone who is gonna flame its a straight section of the highway that i can see clearly down and there was zero traffic literally) than it is to say well i was just cruising there like you would be in this. also in this car you will never have a feeling dramatic driving unless doing illegal things. its great fun blasting around in under powered cars cause you feel like your at the limit so much. case and point, the miata. the other thing i will say is that the maintenance on this car specifically is expensive. i don’t know about the engine etc but i do know that to replace those 15x 8.5 fronts and 15x 9.5 rears is not cheap its like buying big truck wheels every time and a car like this isnt meant for tire management in my opinion but that also has to do with the driver. a odd side effect of me buying the saturn i got was that i learned to fabricate things. with this i doubt you will, there are to many “off the shelf” items and youll get those instead. not to mention your first car should be a beater really because you are learning in it. im not saying your learning to drive to get on the road in it but if your on this website your definitely gonna try and do some fancy stuff in it. things you can expect will be clutches tires possibly brake pads (and the ensuing bleeding and brake job) etc which is all at home stuff i admit but id rather do it in a honda and be done in 3 hrs with a 100$ nice clutch than the 200 dollar OEM replacement clutch for the C4. dont get me wrong i love the car but i feel a first car should be a starter point. not to mention if you start in something like this you may not respect the want of moving up in power and building a car etc as much as you would if you started with a smaller econobox type car.

I know this is a bit late, but if you’re still looking for one, I would recommend it to you!
