5 Reasons BMW is Overrated

Before I start, let me say that I really like BMW, and coming up with points for this list was hard. However, no car maker is without it’s faults, and BMW is worshiped here on Car Throttle like cattle are in India. Here are some reason BMW isn’t everything it’s cracked up to be.

ONE BMW doesn’t make performance cars with AWD systems.
AWD has many advantages including added stability under power, fast corner exits, more ability to put the power down in slippery conditions and faster launches. BMW hasn’t caught onto that concept, but Mercedes has, and Audi has almost perfected it. While I applaud BMW for sticking with RWD, you can only imagine what they could do if they made AWD M models.

TWO BMW is the car equivalent of Metallica.
Why do I say this? Both things were good in the 90’s, decent in the 2000’s, and right about now, things are falling apart. The most loved things of both were made years ago. The BMW M3 got heavier and lost driver involvement over the years it was produced. The M3 got progressively heavier from the E30, up to the E92, to where the E92 convertible weighed almost 4,000 pounds. The E92 is basically a grand tourer, and the M3 is supposed to be a sports car. Then BMW changed the name all together and called their new sports coupe the M4. Granted, the F80 weighs less than the E92, but the F80 isn’t as involving to drive as previous M3’s, it has a smaller engine and turbochargers. As Alex Kersten put it in the five generation M3 review. “With modern cars I’ve said this time and time again, they drive themselves. You can be a bit of a buffoon and drive this (F80 M3) fairly quickly.” There’s more to a driver’s car than being fast you know.

THREE Many Car Throttle employees own them.
You would expect that a social media network for cars would have a parking lot full of different cars, but instead, all we get is a lot of BMW’s, maybe a Miata, a wrapped Suzuki econobox, and a Nissan drift mobile that lives in Japan. Sometimes, it feels as if Car Throttle is shoving it’s love for BMW down our throats, no matter what we do or say. I’m scared Car Throttle is going to form a BMW Mafia and do drive by shootings at petrolheads with AMG cars or S/RS models “because we need to eliminate the competition. The ruthless Adnan Ebrahim with his right hand men Alex Kersten and Gabor Szedlak looking for trouble on the streets of London.

FOUR BMW drivers.
A majority of BMW drivers are rich frat boys and posers that don’t know a thing about cars, some of them are chavs who vape like crazy, and some drive like idiots. Those BMW drivers don’t just forget to use their blinkers, but brake check people, cut people off and act like everything is your fault. I know there are good BMW drivers out in the wild, but it seems like the majority of them are menaces to society.

FIVE BMW made the 2 series Active Tourer.
BMW is famous for making great luxury cars and sports cars, and people like it that way. THEN, BMW pulled the 2 Series Active Tourer out of their hindquarters and placed it there on the table for all of us to look at it in horror. Why on Earth would BMW make a FWD mom mobile? The 2 Series Active Tourer stands for everything BMW is not, a cheap boring car that soccer moms drive by the droves. Come on BMW, stick to what you’re good at, building good luxury and sports cars.

Not the Stig

I actually hate the idea of AWD M cars and I think a lot of people will agree with me in saying that if BMW goes off of RWD in its performance line then I will no longer be a supporter of them. Even Mercedes AMG cars drifting away from RWD makes me sad. Its no longer a tire burning muscle car but an excuse for people with a lot of money and not a lot of driving know how to comfortably buy a vehicle with 2-3x as much power as they have ever had.

I have to disagree with 2. BMW is in no way falling apart. They are working to save the manual, unlike many other carmakers (Ferrari, Lamborghini, etc.) and they just released the M4 GTS and M2, as well as the stunning i8. And if you look at the launch video for the M2, you see lots of homegrown tuners at the track with their E36 and E46 M3s. This, along with the M2’s simple existence, is enough to show me that BMW haven’t forgotten about us enthusiasts. And what of cars like the 1M? That was a brilliant enthusiasts’ car, but BMW had to make it limited-edition, and why? Because most people don’t care about such things. A shame, but in order for them to make a profit they had to make it limited. Don’t worry, BMW hasn’t forgotten us yet, but they have to stay in business by appealing to the mass market. As long as they keep throwing us bones like this, I’m fine with their current course. Except the 2 series Active Tourer. That’s just sh*t.

All Wheel Drive, it means that when you step on the gas, all of the wheels get power from the engine, not just the front tires or the rear tires.
