AE86 OR AE88? Public Service Announcement
Is this car an AE86 or an AE88? Well i’ll tell you. Chances are if you think it’s an AE88 you have watched regular car reviews video on the AE86. And if you haven’t seen that video and call it an AE88 then you have seen someone else’s comment calling it an AE88. If you pay attention to the video you’ll get the sense that neither the owner nor regular has any idea about the car. It’s obvious he’s an initial d fan that bought the car for 5k more than its worth without doing any research on it first.
How do i know this? Well there is no such thing as an AE88. Yes it’s true that USDM AE86s vins read “AE88” but the term AE86 isn’t from the vin, it’s from the chassis code. And every single AE86 sold in the USA has AE86 stamped as the chassis code.
This post is out of frustration to all the people calling AE86s AE88s. Anytime you see someone saying that please correct them.

wait what? you say it’s an ‘AE88’ then go on to say ‘AE88’s don’t even exist…
Maybe i made a typo i cant find. Can you please quote me the sentence where i said that?
According to regular car reviews on YouTube, the ae88 is just an american ae86 with a different engine or something
That’s not an AE86
How to solve this:
Buy any SR5 AE86 in America.
Look at VIN number.
It reads as AE86.
Swap with GTS components, such as powertrain, drivetrain, fuel system and others.
Tell everyone to piss off, you have a real LHD AE86.
Its a AE86.
Chassis build plate will confirm.
In America the vin has ae88 on the end for some reason cbf looking up the exact reason why. Now can everyone STOP with the ae88 bullsh!t
No. I’ll call AE88 to differentiate them from actual 86.
Also thank you for making this post 👍
Ae88’s are just usdm models, the power is about 10bhp lower and the suspension is different, not that it makes a difference as they just get swapped to coilovers 90% of the time.
Did you even read the post? Its not actually a question… There is no such thing as an AE88. And the suspension isn’t even different, USDM AE86s just were detuned for americas emissions with a few cosmetic differences here and there.
Fml the resolution is all fkd up ^
Here’s a better one i think
Nice, but i don’t get why you’re saying things about gt-s’s when you’re not from america and your car isn’t even a gt-s. See this is the exact problem i’m trying to solve, misinformation spread by people who essentially hear it from wiki or the grapevine. Sorry but it’s true.
My pals car is an imported gts from california, we found some pretty minor differences from them other than the vin number and brakes. Like in stock form the gts had more caster angle than a stock japanese model and the suspension was softer in the gts. The car is now a full on rallysprint car :).
Something must be off about it then because it wasn’t possible to get a gt-s without rear discs. What year is it? And what color was it originally? And i’ll just assume the vin reads AE88.
The car was red when it was imported from the us, i think the last owner had done something to the car. It was rustef real bad and it had no fenders, when he ordered fenders with the production number, they shipped trueno fenders instead of the levin fenders so it’s levin front end converted.
