Just based on the title of the article it seems like USA is a major a-hole more-so than usual with importing cars, but if you read the article the sentence makes more sense and not as much of an a-hole. But still they are still a-holes about importing cars.

I read somewhere that car companies didn’t want people importing cars instead of buying new ones so they made this law to protect companies profits

Yes that is correct and the company was Mercedes.

Except he didn’t face 20 years and a $250k fine… “30 to 36 months probation and a fine of a bit over $18,000.”

Yes, he did face that. That was one possible result, just not the one he got.

1 reason why I hate America. I live here and the only benefit to the state of Florida (where I live) is no emissions. BUT we have the stupid import laws because of European auto manufactures. Back in the 1980s Mercedes of North America was losing profits to Mercedes of Germany (Same company, but split profits. People were buying and importing cars from Germany and Mercedes of North America was losing between 6k-10k every sale) so they paid the government millions (along with several other manufactures paying the government) to put a law in place of importing cars. Thus the 25 year law was born. Its just a bunch of bullshit really.

I like Japanese cars (I drive one) and having a big choice of cars in the market is great, it keeps car makers on their toes but if I lived in the USA and had a big choice of cars, I don’t think I would go to the hassle of importing any car…
