So, this is Suzuki’s latest performance Kei Car. It’s calle the Suzuki Alto RS Turbo ( HA36S ). It has a Inline 3 660cc turbocharged engine that develops 64 hp as Kei car restriction. It comes in both 2WD and 4WD, like most cars in Japan. It has only a 5-Speed semi Automatic Gearbox, so you won’t have the 3rd pedal. So the 4WD version of this car weighs 720kg, 100kg+ less than other performance Kei cars, such as the S660 and the Copen. Sounds quite nice.

For perfection, I’d go for the S660 or the Autozam AZ-1. But if I can choose any Kei car, this is the one I’d go with, the 1st generation Copen. Sure it’s FWD, but as far as I know, this car has the most torque in the Kei car class until today. The redline is high although it’s not as high as the Honda Beat, and it’s too cute for me to resist. But the S660 is still on my "cars I must own" list.

I love kei cars, especially convertible ones, like the Honda Beat, Suzuki Cappuccino. The biggest issue is that I live in Europe, and we drive on the other side. Although I think I’ve read somewhere that the S660 might come to europe/US with the steering wheel on the left side, that would be awesome. Also I’ve seen some 1st gen Copens with the steering wheel on the left side… I don’t know how sporty these small cars can be, 64 hp seems too small, even considering it’s low weight.

Kei cars are designed for the city. As Japan’s restriction, the displacement is limited to 660cc. back in the 360cc era, there were no limit on displacement, but because manufacturers have been boosting engines with turbos and superchargers ( IDK any kei car with supercharger ) during the 550cc era, now it’s limited to 64hp. Since Kei cars have lots of restictions, manufacturers are trying to win with many ways, like reducing weight, improving handling, and giving more torque on lower RPMs. Personally, I love Kei cars, they are small, practical ( most ), and since most of them are Japanese, they are reliable. Yes, the 1st gen Copen did come to Europe, and so did the Cappuccino, some Beats, and very little AZ-1. Honda is planning for S1000, a 1000cc turbo version of the S660, which they say will come to europe ( IDK about the USA ), for the S660 itself, I don’t know, I think it won’t win the market in Europe, people will go to the new MX-5 over the S660, since Kei cars are treated equally in europe.
