How to install a fire extinguisher in your car: #FCDDIY#003

1 additional kg you won't even notice could save someones/your live or a/your car!

Overview:

Duration: <15 minutes
Difficulty: easy
Cost: €10-€30 depending on the size of the fire extinguisher
Type of DIY: (possible) lifesaver

Let me start with what you need for this DIY:

  • a solid piece of rod in your car, in my case I used the rod used to adjust the passenger seat, but anything will do (just make sure it can support the 1-2kg)
  • fire extinguisher (almost always includes a mount) 1-2kg with ABC powder
  • zip ties 2 small ones 2 big ones
  • piece of anti-slip material as big as your middle finger but twice as long
(That’s the material I used, both links go to the same product:
    http://www.fritz-berger.de/product/Antirutschmatte-30x150cm/447800
    http://www.amazon.de/dp/B005JBMCXS )

My set, that I bought for around €10,-

Regarding the fire extinguisher itself:
Size: 1-2kg is enough for most car related fires if you start to extinguish as soon as possible
1kg will make for ~7seconds of flow, depending on your model
Most will have a pressure gauge on it so you can see whether the pressure is right
If you have any questions about this, feel free to write a comment and ask me :D!

Most fire extinguisher need to be serviced every ~2 years, take care of that!

Preparation:

#1. Cut the piece of anti-slip material and fold it 1-2 times depending on the size of the contact patch you want to have.

#2. Use the 2 small zip ties to secure the anti-slip material on the mount.

#3. Now before going to your car, put the 2 bigger zip-ties on, now it should look like this:

This is my setup

Now let me explain some things ...

#1. This is a piece of anti-slip material

#2. This is a strap that connects the fire extinguisher to the mount, it is opened by pulling on the red lever, where it says “PULL” simple right?

#3. This is a pressure gauge (<—optional!) that shows three areas (red=pressure too low, green=good, red=pressure too high)

#4 Now put it on the lever used to adjust the passenger seat

Don’t worry, that piece of metal can easily support 1kg!
It’s still possible to adjust the seat without having to use to much forse.

ATTENTION! Do you see what connects the fire extinguisher to the mount? The red little piece of plastic is used to free the fire extinguisher when it needs to be used. It’s important to make sure everything is mounted so you as the driver can pull this lever UP, the 1kg will then provide enough counterweight so it opens up.
If you mess up/don’t think that part through you might loose valuable seconds!

Thank you for reading through, I hope this helped you, leave me a comment with your feedback if you want to :D

Yeah :D thank you.
Glad you like it!
I figured 1 additonal kilogram to 1205kg means nothing, but it adds so much safety!

It’s not just about protecting your car. It’s about protecting others, their cars or even something else like a school - see Sam Stone’s comment below!
Also, only because your car doesn’t go up in flames easily doesn’t mean it couldn’t happen - but surely I hope it never will!

We have a guy in town that designed a universal fire extinguisher mount for vehicles. Check out http://www.thebracketeer.com/ He drives the orange Camaro everywhere.

Wow those mounts are awesome!
Very practical. Although 85 bucks isn’t cheap, I think this is great :) !
