If my engine were to seize up going 80 on the highway in gear, what would happen...? Would I feel or hear anything...? Would the wheels lock up...? What exactly would happen...?

I doubt it would lock up. You would feel a very heavy deceleration, but the momentum of your car would be enough to turn the engine. But you would definitely notice the deceleration

Ok… So would it feel like it would be braking…? I didn’t even notice that my car didn’t have power until I felt nothing coming from the gas pedal… I am just trying to piece this all together

I think it would started to slowing down as its started to loose power. And probably it can lock up wheels if you don´t use clutch (if manual) immediately.

I didn’t notice it slowing down… I had it in gear, and I just sort of let it drive and then it stopped running… I really think it was an alternator problem because I didn’t feel anything really happen

Yo! AOTC, I just thought of something, one day when I was driving my Maxima (back when I drove that car) I suddenly lost power, the engine still ran but when I put the pedal to the floor nothing happened, I thought my tanny went because I heard a loud knocking noise (which was my wheel hitting a curb when I pulled into the parking lot) so, is your throttle body electrically powered? or cable driven? my Maxima is electrically powered and the problem was my alternator went bad and didn’t have enough power to send to the throttle body which made me think my tranny went bad. This might help you out a bit. so let me know! :)

Yeah everything is leading to the alternator at this point… It makes the most logical sense too because it hasn’t been replaced, and I just found out today that I had full oil

For example, this is my maxima’s throttle body. See there arnt any cables? Only wires, that is electronically powered. speaking of my maxima, I need to fix this thing….

Happened to a local today… Hit pothole, broke oil pan, caught fire, the family narrowly escaped.

No, it wasn’t stance. It was Canada pothole. They’re freaking craters.

Yeah that doesn’t surprise me… We have some nasty ones here in Michigan too… They have redone a lot of roads here lately though, so now you don’t have to swerve everywhere to avoid them… But if that is what happens when the engine seizes up, then I don’t have to worry lol

You just felt a loss of power? What happened to rpm? Gauges at the time? (All of them) any loud sounds? From what im reading in your comments it does seem like an electrical fault. Jacob bear could have a point. I know my altima has an electric driven throttle and a lack of power could cause failures or a loss in power. Do you have a voltmeter by chance?

Yeah it just dropped to 0, and I heard absolutely nothing… I didn’t even hear it die or anything, and I don’t have one

As someone who literally just had something similar in your style of truck (Saturday afternoon to be exact), you will not be automatically turned into a missile. You would probably feel a sudden deceleration and loss of power of the gas, as well as a tightening in steering and brakes. The wheels wont lock up, they will essentially act like you’re in neutral. The K series trucks (along with most automobiles with power things) will loose power steering and braking, however it will revert to manual mode, so you will be able to steer and stop, just with some force. They are really hard to turn this way (I had to essentially turn to the side and use full body weigh for a tight turn), but you will have enough steering to keep from careening into other vehicles. Same goes for the brakes, youll have to stomp on them but you will slow to a stop. In short, you should be able to safely pull over and wait for rescue.

I don’t have power steering to begin with, and the brakes worked perfectly fine

I have felt that multiple times on my single cylinder 500cc two stroke bike. I don’t know if it’s the same as a multiple cylinder engine seizing up, but i hope it helps. At first i felt a sudden power loss and some unconnected feel with the throttle at the last split second before the piston completely gets jammed and locks the rear wheels, but i was able to pull the clutch to let it roll, It was at 70-ish mph..
