It takes a lot to be the winningest Corvette ever and the L88 #12 Owens-Corning is that car

This 1968 L-88 Corvette sponsored by Owens/Corning Fiberglass holds the title as the most victorious Corvette in history. Backed by a team that includes legendary names such as Tony DeLorenzo, Jerry Thompson, Don Yenko, Gib Hufstaeder and the Father of the Corvette Zora Arkus-Duntov this car was unstoppable in FIA and SCCA sanctioned races. Among its many victories during its triumphant career are the 1969 and 1972 SCCA National A Production Championships, 1968 and 1970 SCCA National A Production Runner-Up, 2nd Place in GT at the 1969 12 Hours of Sebring and the 1969 and 1970 GT class wins in the 24 Hours of Daytona. During the 1969-1971 seasons this car along with its sister cars (2, 6, 14, 30, 67, 72) dominated the field winning 22 of 22 SCCA/FIA National Events with this car winning 12 of the events. Powered by the infamous L88 big-block 427 that produced around 560 bhp stock, tuned by the team this engine produced upwards of 600 bhp. With an upgraded crankshaft, 12.5:1 pistons, cold air induction and a 850 CFM dual feed Holley carburetor this was and still is the engine to have. Even pushing more than 600 bhp the engine proved to extremely reliable even in endurance races and formed the heart of this beast. But that’s not all along with numerous race upgrades made to the car by the team of young GM engineers, who where being feed “lunch box” parts under the table by GM as they did not official sponsor the team, the car rode on upgraded suspension and 15 inch Minilite wheels mounting 15 inch Goodyear Blue Streak racing slicks. Not bad for a bunch of young devoted engineers who as they put it” wore a path between it [Jerry Thompson’s garage] and GM’s parts warehouse.” From sticking it to Ferrari’s, Porsches, Corvettes and other high end performance cars this Corvette did it all. Did I mention the top also came off if need to meet SCCA rules!!! So there you have it the winningest ‘Vette in history… And DAMN IF SHE ISN’T SEXY!!!
