What you think of a BMW E36 Coupe (316i, 318i or even 320i) for first car?

Are the reliable?
How much they “drink”?
And those things…

Go for the 320. I would recomend a 328i. In my Country( Germany) Car insurance is measured by how many accidents. (328i rarer than 320i -> less accidants) So its lower than the 320.

But the 320’s line six with 2.3 ltrs. is a happy beast too :)

320 only, better brakes better torque, drinks the same (11-12l/100km). Rust is an issue, a few problem spots with the overall reliablity, but nothing major. Get a car that does not have VANOS and a manual. LSD can be retrofitted for cheap enough.

Go for 318is. They’re pretty much as fast as a 320i, but 4cyl means cheaper maintainance, consumption etc. Enough power, but not too much for a beginner driver. Good to learn how RWD behaves. Pretty reliable but their bad side is interior. Often you will find hanging roof and door upholstery, ripped leather on the steering wheel and shift knob, worn out seats.. Check front struts and fenders for rust, check front suspension.
Good luck and enjoy, E36 is awesome.

the 6zyl does not use much more fuel. Maybe 1 liter more in 100km. A friend has a 316 and i have a 320 and they use almost the same.

really depends on how you drive it as clarkson statet when he had the race with the prius and the m3.

I don’t know if the different models are different in the US versus Europe, but here in the US I would say that a 325i or 330i would be a good first car. My brother has an e90 325xi (awd version) and it’s really nice. It handles well because of the springs we put on the car, sounds good, and is not too fast.
A more affordable option would definitely be an e36 or e46 for sure though. Just make sure you get one that hasn’t been thrashed and is in relatively good condition.

Go for at least a 318is. 316 and 318 are too low on power they drink as much as the 18is or 20i. Actually 6-pots consume nearly the same so you might consider getting a 325 or a 328. Difference on fuel is not that much, but the sound and power is on another level on the 6 cylinders (not for the 320i though. It just sounds good that’s all).

Cooling system is known to be weak, rear subframe cracks on high power models. Other than that the E36 is the ultimate 90s BMW. Get one.

They can get a little pricey to repair if you don’t do it yourself but hands down one of the best first cars to have! I started with a 328i and loved it!
