When you finally get "that" car in the game, but things don't really work out as expected...

We’ve all been there. After hours of playing, waiting for that one car you’ve been wanting to unlock/buy, you finally go and pick it up… and it turns out to be not that great. Yeah, heartbreaking… I know the struggle.

To start the topic I recall two experiences, from the top of my head:

Toyota Supra, NFS Underground 2

It was the one I wanted, ever since I saw some Supras AI cars. As soon it was unlocked I picked it up, installed all performance parts, did some fine tuning… and disaster, the car was a pig. Didn’t accelerate all that much, too much understeer, and then too much oversteer when I tried to work around that frustrating understeer. Some fettling again, not much improve.
Made a decent drift car, to be honest, but I never liked it in the streets or circuits. Ended up returning to the 240SX I started the game with - so much nimbler and it pretty much matched the Supra in outright speed.

Shelby GT500, Test Drive Unlimited

Well, I don’t really need to explain why I wanted it! It turned out quite horrible around corners, but that was expected - it’s classic muscle car after all! The real problem was, it didn’t have a lot of muscle in a straight line either! Still a nice thing to have in the garage, but I quickly bought a different animal for the classic car races. To be fair, the classic muscle cars were not very good in the game. Sounded pretty much all the same, even nasty when revved (maybe a not very successful sound recording?).

So there you are. Now it’s your turn! Which car(s), in which racing games weren’t up to your expectations? Come on, share your heartbreaking stories in the comments!

Spent like 10 hours playing Forza Horizon 1 when it first game out so I could buy a Venom GT, just to find out I couldn’t upgrade it almost at all…

Need for Speed: Undercover. The Shelby GT500KR. Was during the new Knight Rider hype. Really wanted that car so badly to make it look like KI3T and it was just absolutely useless.

Coincidentally I also tried to make a 500KR look like the 2008 Kitt. I failed to pull off the “pursuit look” so I stuck with the normal look: stock body, black with matte stripes. Used it for most of the rest of the career. Not that undercover is a very challenging game - still better than the Knight Rider 2008, which imo was quite underwhelming…
