When I was like, 1-2 years old, one of the first things I could properly say, while pointing at a sign on the road, was “Hey, that’s the P for parking”… When I was somewhere between 5 and 10 years old, I could distinguish almost any car in pitchback darkness in a forest, 150meters in front of us, just from the shape of the taillights. Even the difference between a mk2 and mk3 Golf. I guess it was in there from birth for me :p
I also always had a HUGE amount of toycars as a child, and would create the biggest pile-ups ever… That just made my car interest grow more and more over the years I guess.
I also always loved the mk2 Golf that my sisters boyfriend used to own. Everyone thought it was a sh*tbox because it always broke, but I loved that thing. Because I couldn’t afford a mk2 Golf at the time, I ended up getting a mk2 Seat Ibiza as my first car, which has some design cues from the Golf.
One of the first cars I decided I HAD to own one day were a BMW E36(because I had one in NFS Shift) and an E Kadett. The Kadetts are all rusted away and don’t interest me anymore, but I did end up getting an E36 as my second car and it’s more fun that I could ever dream of back when I played NFS Shift.
My first spoken word was “car” (not even a joke) my first toys were cars.. My father has always worked for BMW and I have been as well for 5 years now.. So I’m guessing it started at birth 👍
As a kid grew up with Hot Wheels and such. Was 4 years old with a big 1:16 scale Jaguar XJ220. And one of these. Cars were an interest to me from the beginning
I also had a Jaguar XJ220 model that i loved as a kid playing on my carpet :)
I had that exact same rug! but I had a viper
It started genetically: my father loves cars; I love ‘em even more. But you can say it really started when I really watched Formula 1 with care and love, 11 years ago. From then on, I progressed into other forms of motor racing. Another trigger for me was Gran Turismo 4. I started colecting more and more cars and discovered that I liked most of them. From then on, I started watching Discovery Channel’s car documentaries on everything: drifting, Ford GT, Formula 1, Endurance; and some shows like Monster Garage and Overhaulin. Today I’m studying to become a chassis developer for Endurance cars.
One word: Matchbox
Well, I started with playing with toys, then I would dissamble and rebuild them, and then It grown on me. Then when I become older I started to view Top Gear , Fifth Gear and other programms, but sadly no one in my family likes cars and It’s still difficult to convince my parents than I want to work the rest of my like with something related with cars or mechanical engineering…
My passion for cars started when I was 12 years old and my grandfather had a hot rod shop in Garden City, ID. He tossed my ass on a metal lathe and told me that I was learning the family trade. No one else really wanted to learn to be a grease monkey and throughout the years, I learned to be a mechanic, welder and fabricator. He and his shop is gone but the legacy still lives as I do custom work on classic/vintage/exotic British and American vehicles, being one of the few in the Northwest who does work on older flathead and inline 4s, inline 6s and 8s as well as flathead v8s. I’ve dabbled in German and Japanese vehicles from time to time but my love for older cars will always be there.
I was born with it.
I lives in Brazil and here, I don’t know how it works in outside, but here, when you sell/buy a car, there’s a guy who makes the transfer of the vehicle from someone’s name to another, he also legalizes the documentation, and for this, he may have to stay with the car for a day or two. My father was that guy, and on that time, he had a GM Omega (a Vauxhall Carlton) which I really likes, but he often came home with a lot of different cars, and aways takes me to a walk on then. On that time I was three, maybe four years old, and my love simply began. Sorry for my poor english ;)
As with a lot of people, my dad was the main reason. I was driven home from the hospital in his Citroën 2CV. As long as I can remember I loved that thing. To me it was, and still is, a thing of true beauty. The 2CV went away, but my dad never abandoned the Citroën brand. A handful BXs (see pic) and eventually a Xantia filled our driveway. He also had a Trabant for a while, and while it was a truly terrible car, I kinda liked it in a strange way. It had a lot of character.
Once on holiday we accidentally ran into a Ferrari meet, and I saw my first batch of Italian beauties. Instantly fell in love. Obviously I also played with toy cars a lot and eventually made the step to videogames and reading car magazines/sites, which slowly had me form my own taste apart from what my dad drove. I started to appreciate pretty much any car for what it was, but always had a preference for Italian and British sportscars that never went away.
From about 10 years old I wanted to get my license and drive. That’s all I could really think about for many many years. I think I learn for my driving test theory exam long before I even turned 18 because I wanted to nail it the first time. And I did. Still one of the best days of my life.
Drove around in my parents’ Citroën Xantia for a few months while looking for my own ride, which made me appreciate Citroën as a brand even more. The Xantia is a masterpiece. For myself I wanted something special, not just a Golf, Civic or Astra. I really wanted a Lotus or a Ferrari, but that was out of budget and just generally not a smart first car. So I went with the next best thing: an MX-5. That just had me love cars even more. Got into the community, went to meets, met awesome people. Now I never wanna get out of this little world of enthusiasts anymore, ever.
Anyway, that’s my story. I really suck at writing short comments.
